QuantumBlack Data Engineer Interviews

I have my final round interviews coming up with McKinsey (QuantumBlack – Data Engineer), and I’d really appreciate some guidance from those who’ve been through this stage.

From what I understand, the final round will include:

  • Technical Expertise Interview (TEI) + PEI
  • Problem Solving Scenario (PSS) + PEI

How different is the partner-led PSS compared to earlier rounds?

Any tips on structuring answers better under pressure?

Should I expect the case studies (especially in the PSS/partner round) to be more technically focused given my background, or are they typically a mix of both business and technical problem-solving?

Would really appreciate any advice, especially from people who recently went through final rounds.

    Thanks

I can share what I know from coaching technical hires at McKinsey.

What changes with the partner round: partners care less about whether you can execute the steps and more about how you think under ambiguity. Expect them to push on your reasoning and ask why, not just what. More back-and-forth, less structured walkthrough.

How technical will it get: expect a mix. The TEI will go deep on your domain, architecture decisions, pipeline design, scalability trade-offs. The partner PSS is more likely a business problem with a data lens. Connecting your technical choices to business outcomes is what separates strong candidates.

Staying structured under pressure: pause before you answer. State your approach before you execute it. Think out loud. For technical questions, clarify requirements and constraints before you jump to implementation.

You are in the final round. They already believe you can do the job technically.

hey there :)

for QB final rounds the PSS with a partner feels less structured than earlier rounds and more like a senior conversation where they test how you think, prioritize and communicate under ambiguity, so expect fewer “classic case steps” and more back and forth, often jumping between business context and technical depth; compared to earlier rounds it’s less about getting to the perfect answer and more about judgment, clarity and whether they’d trust you in front of a client, and yes given your Data Engineer background you can expect a mix but with slightly more technical flavor like data architecture trade offs, pipelines, scalability or data quality, always anchored in business impact; under pressure the key is to slow down, structure before speaking, and explicitly signpost your thinking, that alone already puts you ahead of most candidates

best,
Alessa :)

Congrats on getting to the final round!

The differences won't be huge. The cases will be similar. In fact, senior interviewers care less about the technical elements and more about communication and structured thinking. They are constantly thinking about whether they would see you in front of a client or not.

What is critical is that you show growth on the feedback they gave you from the final round.

Feel free to drop me a message with the feedback that you received and I can share some thoughts on how to address it.

Only one round to go! You're almost there.

Best,
Cristian
