Pre-interview case with MBB

Hi,

I'm reaching out since I got my first round and was reached out by an associate for a mock case to help with prep. Is that case evaluative? Thanks!

Hey,

speaking for McKinsey in Europe: If this is a coaching call, this is not evaluative, but should really help to prepare you for the interview.

However, with remote interviewing McK introduced pre-interviews (i.e. a case call with a consultant before invited to the interviews). Those are evaluative and it is decided afterwards if you are invited to the “normal” interviews. They do not take place on a usual basis, but please be aware of this difference (coaching vs. pre-interview) when referring to these calls :)

Best,

Simon

Hey there,

No, they will provide high-level tips on where to focus your preparation based on your performance. Results are not communicated to HR or anyone else.

Also, mock cases are usually not even conducted by real interviewers but normal consultants.

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

No, the mock won’t have an impact on your assessment in terms of the real recruiting process.

Mock cases are done by consulting companies to help candidates to prepare for the actual interview – it is a way for companies to help you to understand your current level and are not used for evaluation purposes.

Best,

Francesco

No - you are always informed beforehand if a case is evaluative or not. If you are unsure please ask. Given what you have said this is very likely just an additional resource for you to prep for interviews.

Not evaluative. They are just trying to help you succeed.

Hi there,

Nope, don't worry it's not evaluative at all!

That said, in order to get the most out of it, make sure you're around 80% prepared/ready when you jump into the session. That way their feedback will be most relevant to getting you across the line.

Good luck!

Hello,

In my experience with US offices, that case is not evaluative, and is an opportunity for you to practice a case closely fitted to the interview style of that firm, and to ask the consultant any questions you have about the firm. Sometimes it will be conducted by a regular consultant who is not part of the interviewer team (but is getting involved in recruiting).
