No response after communicating a different MBB offer?

HI there,

I‘m waiting on an MBB final round decision, and I recently received an offer from a different MBB (in the US, if this matters). About a week ago, I communicated this to them and let them know what the deadline for the offer is. They told me they’d try to get back to me before then. This is my preferred firm, but I can’t let the other offer pass unless this firm were to extend me an offer before the deadline.

The deadline is in 48 hours and I still haven’t received a decision. How should I act?

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer! In terms of your question:

Q: The deadline is in 48 hours and I still haven’t received a decision. How should I act?

I would recommend calling HR to ask if they have any updates – hopefully, this will help to get feedback before the deadline.

If you don’t hear back before the deadline, I would recommend accepting the offer from the other firm. It doesn’t make much sense that you reject the offer if the other offer has not been extended.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offer!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, considering the tight deadline, I would advise you to have a quick call with the HR manager. Express your strong interest in their firm but also mention that due to the deadline from the other offer, you would appreciate an update on your application status.
  • Moreover, if you do not receive a response before your deadline, it would be prudent to accept the offer at hand. It is better to secure a position at the other firm than to risk losing both opportunities.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

First of all, congrats on the offer - how amazing! Just remember no matter what you're in an amazing position.

You can absolutely follow-up again and let them know the deadline is, specifically, in 48 hours.

For the original firm, personally, I would try to negotiate. Send some light counter negotiation…this will buy you some time.

Hi!

If you've already told them that you have another offer and informed them about the deadline, there's not much else that you can do.

At most, you can remind them about it, but it might come across as being too pushy.

Probably it just takes too long for them to get together and come up with a recommendation.

I would suggest you just wait until the last moment until you respond to your offer and hope that the others answer in the meantime.

Good luck!
Cristian

Do a follow up now, to remind them they need to come back to you with an offer until tomorrow.

In the meantime, please do notice Ian's suggestion of trying to negotiate something, as you may gain a day or two in the process, but that's really the most you can do.

If you don't get an offer on time, accept the offer (don't leave that to the last hour) and (politely) inform the MBB you were applying to and didn't get the offer.

Hi, congrats on the offer!

This is my preferred firm, but I can’t let the other offer pass unless this firm were to extend me an offer before the deadline.

Always remember, that your preferred MBB is the one that gave you an offer, nit the other way around :D

Nick

Hi there,

it sounds to me like you have taken the right steps within your control. I would not let the offer you have go to waste for a “maybe” offer from another firm at a later stage.

Given that your preferred MBB is aware of your deadline and they still haven't gotten back to you yet, I would not bank on them. You can still give it another day and see if you get a written offer from them but I would otherwise make sure to accept the US offer in time before the deadline expires (assuming that it would be acceptable for you to live and work in the US).

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I will accept the other offer if they don’t get back to me in time, but I’m curious about what I should do before then.

Should I follow up, and what should I say to them?

Hi there,

Yes, you should act. Kindly ping your recruiting contact to make sure they didn't forget about you. Worst case scenario: you have another offer.

Best,

Alberto

Hi there, 48hr is an unusual decision time. Get on a call with HR to extend it for at least 5 days. Warm regards, Freddy
