new job while interviewing

Hi,

I have recently accepted an MBB offer, but after receiving the message about the background check, I became a bit anxious. I graduated this summer from university, and I submitted my CV after graduation. Since I knew my interview process would not start before August/September, I applied to other jobs as well, and I received an offer from another company, where I started working in September. I did not wait for the interview process because I knew it would take long, and I was not sure whether I would receive an offer. My interviews started in September at the MBB company, and I did not submit an updated CV after joining the other company in September.

Could this cause any issues during the background check or administrative process? I did not explicitly tell HR that I had started a new position, and during my interviews I presented myself as someone who was not currently working. Now that I became anxious, I have added my current employer to my application profile as my most recent role.

I know it was a mistake not to inform the MBB company, but it was my first month at the new company and I did not want to make a bad impression by saying I had just started another job while interviewing with MBB. Also, I submitted my CV months before joining that company.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offer!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, you’re not the first candidate to be in this situation. I would advise you to be transparent from now on, which you already did by updating your profile.
  • Moreover, please keep in mind that background checks are mainly to catch serious red flags like fake jobs, degrees, or major gaps. Deviations due to time delays like this happen often and are usually not escalated.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming consulting career start, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

This shouldn’t be a major issue as long as your CV is now accurate and matches your current employment. MBB HR and background checks mainly want to verify dates, roles, and your qualifications. It’s good that you updated your profile. Just be honest if any questions come up during the process as minor timing overlaps like this are usually not a deal-breaker.

I wouldn't worry about it.

It seems like the recruiting process was in parallel with you starting the new role. That's perfectly fine. It's important that you are transparent about and collaborative during the background check process. But as long as you didn't purposefully mislead the employer or fake any of your credentials, there is nothing to worry about.

Best,
Cristian

I don't see why this would be an issue. It's absolutely normal and there's nothing wrong with your situation.
