McKinsey's job position

Hi, I just finished my MBA and am applying for McKinsey as an experience hire. Through school recruiter, I got in touch with two offices. Office A (less preferred location) assessed my CV and invited me for an interview for associate already. Office B (more preferred location) made assessment and felet I'm more fit for senior associate/junior EM but it will only start to hire senior associate position next year though at their office.

with this dilemma, I'd like to get some advice:

1. how many years' difference in McKinsey's hierachy between associate and senior associate? Is it a 6-month wait and likely change of hiring plan worthy it?

2. despite that 6 months is not really long but can be full of uncertainty in hiring plan, so I'm thinking about whether there can be a workaround. A potential route I'm thining for office B: Can I ask to be lined up now for interviews as associate and once interviews are successful, I join the firm as an associate and then switch to senior associate when headcount is open next year. Do you think it's okay to discuss this idea with recruiter? any similar cases you have seen before?

Are there any other possible paths that you could advise that I can line up immediately for an interview right now but for the senior associate position?

Thank you in advance.

Hey there,

Straight to your questions:

1. Depending on the office, the difference can be up to 1.5 years I believe, definitely not jsut 6 months. So in theory you would be roughly 1 year 'behind'

2. You can definitely push for it and wait for their reply. You have nothing to lose here and HR staff is there not only to help you with the application but also to support your career development.

3. I don't think there is any other possibility.

Overall, I don't think it will make much difference for your career whether you start as a Sr. Asc. or Asc. In the latter case, you definitely have an easier transition period to ease into the McKinsey way of working, which could be beneficial in the longer run.

Cheers,

Florian

The largest uncertainty is whether you will get in (to McK and other firms) or not and so I would generally prioritise the office where you have more traction. Location is something you can worry about down the line.

1. Beyond pay, there is hardly a difference. Unless you feel super comfortable joining McKinsey and excelling from day one, the majority of people, even if joining from other MBBs, benefit from 6-12 months to really learn the "McKinsey way" and also develop sponsorship which is crucial to be a successful EM

2. There should be no headcount from the "senior associate" role. This is very office dependent but typically it just means you are a second year associate. There is typically no promotion from Associate to Senior Associate.

Your case also depends on whether office A and B are in the same cluster or not as there will be very limited flexibility to move outside clusters (e.g., North East Office to West Coast Office, etc.). If you are prioritising getting into McKinsey then I would just go with office A where you already have traction. If your goal is to work in location B then, I would prioritise that together with your other interviews and offers.

Good luck!

I would say if being at McKinsey is important to you then go for the associate position and in 6 months you are very likely to be in the senior associate role assuming you do good work regardless. 6 months is a long time and many things can change in that time.

Hi there,

I agree with Udayan.

I think if you're waiting a whole year to get that senior associate position, you may as well start working now as an associate!

Here's my thinking:

  1. You have no gaurentee that that senior associate position stays open through to next year (for all we know, the pipeline could shift again and that role disappears)
  2. By the time you get that senior associate role, you've earned plenty more $ and are only 6 months "behind" anyway
  3. It'll be easier to get hired as an associate, given you have the experience etc.
  4. The experience you gain in the next year will be well worth it (especially if you don't have any other options)

A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush :)
