Hi,
I got referred by an EM to apply for an Associate position. I'm applying as a post MBA experienced hire. After I applied I got the solve game invite and completed it Monday (10/6). When should I expect to hear back if I made the cut? Are there any early reads to know if I'm moving to the next round?
McKinsey: Timeline to hear back if you're moving to 1st round interview post Solve Game
Hi there,
First of all, congratulations on the progress in the application process with McKinsey thus far!
I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:
- First of all, contrary to what other coaches have said, there is really no defined timeline for when you'll hear back, as this varies by region, role, and the recruiter’s bandwidth.
- Moreover, there are also no real “early reads” you can look for from your side. I would advise you to stay patient, continue preparing, and avoid overanalyzing the silence.
- Lastly, contrary to what other coaches have said, while you may certainly follow up with the recruiter and inquire about the status of your application, this will neither help your candidacy nor expedite the process.
You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

Your wait times between recruitment stages depend on a lot of factors including:
- Recruiting priorities and open vacancies for hiring for this year
- Vacation plans of the recruiter who is assigned your case
- Availability of interviewers for your 1st and 2nd rounds
In summary, not hearing anything could be good news, you might just be waiting for someone to contact you.

Hi there,
Usually, McKinsey takes around 1–2 weeks to get back after the assessment, though it can vary by office/role. There aren’t really “early reads” as decisions typically come all at once once recruiting reviews all results. If you don’t hear back after two weeks, a polite follow-up to your recruiter or referrer is totally fine.
Hi there,
It is normal for recruiting to take ~2 weeks or so to get back. Don't try to read too much into it.
Don't think there is early read that you can do from your end either...
Just focus on what you can control - prepare the potential upcoming interviews well.
best,
Emily
It varies widely, but on average, it's 1-2 weeks.
I hope you hear back from them soon.
If you have any other questions about the interview process, feel free to drop me a line.

Hi,
this varies quite a bit across offices, regions, etc. But usually around 1-2 weeks.
