McKinsey Solve - Red Rock figures should be rounded?

Hello,

I just took the McKinsey Solve assessment and in the Red Rock part of the test - I realized that the given says to round the final numbers to two figures? During the assessment I was just pulling the values from the calculator directly and entering them in the answer field and most of the times these values weren't rounded to two figures. Will that be a problem?

Thanks!

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, attention to detail is crucial in consulting, and following instructions to the letter is often a part of assessments. However, it's important to remember that everyone can overlook details, especially under the pressure of a timed pre-interview assessment.
  • Moreover, in my experience, minor discrepancies like not rounding off figures as instructed might not be a critical issue, especially if the calculations are correct. I would advise you to simply wait and see about the results.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hello,

Following the instructions is a part of the assessment, nevertheless I think it will have a minor impact and it won't be a reason for a turndown.

Cheers,

Hi!

No, it won't be a decisive factor.

But small mistakes like that can then add up and have a decisive impact.

One of the things that is being tested in the interview is how effective you are at balancing attention to detail to being top-down under time limitations. So do try to get better at understanding instructions and then following them.

Good luck!
Cristian

Hi there,

Agreed with the other coaches here. Everything with instructions is assessed - they're looking for attention to detail here!

That said, this is a small aspect. So, on it's own, it won't eliminate you. If you've done well on the test/questions overall you should be just fine!

It matters but not as much as this alone will kick you out. Fingers crossed, Frederic
