McKinsey Second Round Interview

Hello,

McKinsey keep postponing my final round interview. I did 2 of them but the third one is always postponing. What could be the reason? Does this show that they don't want me? Also, one of the interviewee said that I did a great job in hard questions but I had some mistakes in easy ones. Should I say that I was very good at the first round (especially in math and framework, the manager said to me) to the final interviewee?

Thank you.

Please please don't take this personally!

The perosn who's supposed to interview you just keeps having conflicts (likely a project that's on fire).

Please please also do not bring up past interviews! At all! This only leaves a bad impression to the current interviewer.

Good luck for when that interview does come!

Hi there,

No need to have cold feet about this. If you made it to the 3rd round it is because the interviewers passed you on the previous 2 rounds.

Reasons can be many. Third round has partners and these have tough agendas… they may need to travel (or change their travel plans) or have an emmergency meeting with a client. Or simply it may be because it is August and in some offices people go on vacation therefore there are less recruiters around. Of course, could be an issue of uncertainty regarding office staffing needs in the short term, but there's nothing you can do about it.

Regarding your last question, bringing previous performance to discussion won't help and will probably backfire, as it not only underscores a weakness but also conveys lack of self-confidence. Furthermore, it would raise an eyebrow on your ability to receive feedback (you are basically argueing you are great despite the feedback you received in the previous interview). Lastly, at this point you are not perceived as a reliable source of information regarding your previous performance. In any case, they will want to judge by themselves, so it does not matter how you performed before. What really matters NOW is how you perform in front of them. Focus on that!

Thank you very much.

Indeed, the third one is included in the 2nd round, not 3rd round. But I had 2 of them last week and waiting for the 3rd one, it will be with a foreign partner.

Regarding my second question, will my score on 1st round reflected to the decision offer? because I really want them to know that I outperformed in the 1st round.

Not at all - it is difficult to get availability of partners and senior partners in the summer so it can take a while for these to get scheduled. I know it is frustrating but it just is a matter of patience for this one…

Do not bring up past performance in an interview. It makes you look insecure and not confident in your abilities. If you are a strong candidate that will manifest itself in your final interview as well and they already can see your past interview notes.

Hey there,

This has nothing to do with your performance. If they were not happy, they would not have invited you to the final round.

Be aware that it is summer and schedules are a bit more chaotic than usual. Hence, they are likely struggling to find a slot with a partner that would be eligible to interview you.

Fingers crossed!

Cheers,

Florian

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear that your interview keeps getting postponed, that must be pretty frustrating. The postponing is most likely just because the interviewer is busy, and not anything to do with the strength of your candidacy. You mentioned that the 3rd interviewer is a partner - partners usually have pretty packed schedules, so perhaps they are dealing with some client crises or things moving around at the last minute. That being said, this is definitely not great practice - if the interview keeps getting postponed (more than 2 times, for a period of 2+ weeks) I would suggest politely reaching out to the recruiting team to try to understand why this is happening. But in any case I highly doubt that this has anything to do with how much they want to hire you.

Regarding your second question - I would not recommend bringing up your performance on a prior interview to the final interviewee. It shows a lack of confidence and is irrelevant to the current interview. Even if you did do very well in the first round, the interviewer shouldn't be taking your word for it (i.e. you could say that even if you didn't do well). But don't worry, your performance in that interview will be taken into account - the decision to hire you will be made through deliberation of all the people who interviewed you, and if you did very well in the first round they will have the notes to back that up and will advocate for you, you don't really need to tell them again.

Best of luck with the process and keep us updated on how it goes!

It is always very difficult to get availability of Partners. Uncertainty from clients also does not help. If your interview is being postponed - it is just that.
