I’m preparing for McK R1 interviews for an Associate role (experienced hire) in the Middle East and would appreciate your advice.
For the case portion of the interview, I’ve heard that candidates need to perform well across all areas, while showing a clear strength in at least one. Is that true?
I’d also appreciate any advice on common mistakes to avoid and what tends to help candidates progress to R2.

Great that you are invited to the R1 - many aspiring candidates do not even manage to get to this stage.
For the case portion, in general there are 'tablestakes' skills/abilities that you need to demonstrate, but keep in mind that interviewers are often assessing you holistically and more importantly looking for people who they believe can do the job.
Speaking from BCG experience, the 'spike' comment isnt something that is on the evaluation form, but rather a mindset from the interviewer that is questioning whether or not you are just 'average', or someone who stands out.
In my experience (and I've seen this in many candidates during my time interviewing at BCG), you can definitely not make any mistakes, but still not pass to the next round.
I would suggest focusing on your fundamental problem solving skills - if you have those, it sets you up for success.
