McKinsey France Screening & Prep for MD/MPH Candidate (APD Track)

Hello.

Hello everyone,

I am a bilingual (English/French) candidate with MD and MPH, who recently applied to McKinsey France. I have already completed the McKinsey Solve assessment and am waiting to schedule my screening call with a recruiter.

Coming from an Advanced Professional Degree (APD) background rather than a traditional business/MBA track, I would love some insight from coaches or alumni on a few points:

  1. Recruiter Screening Call: What specific topics/questions should I expect during this initial call in France?
  2. Prep Focus for APD Candidates: For candidates coming from medicine/public health with no prior MBA, what are the most critical business fundamentals or casing areas to master before Round 1?
  3. Language Dynamics: How are interviews typically split between French and English in the France offices for fully bilingual candidates?
  4. McKinsey France Specifics: Are there specific cultural nuances or differences in the casing and PEI style at McKinsey France compared to standard US/UK prep materials?

Thank you in advance for your guidance!

Hi,

Could you confirm what specific role you are applying to? If you coming in as a generalist vs generalist (practice area aligned) vs expert vs knowledge team - the interview process and format does vary abit based on that.

For now, I'm just going to respond assuming you are applying for a generalist role.

  1. Recruiter Screening Call
    1. As the title suggest, this call is meant for the recruiter to screen & get a better understanding of your profile, which may include the following:
      1. Questions to understand your motivations/fit
      2. Questions to understand your expectations
      3. Questions to try and better place you into the right role (if not already decided/determined)
  2. Prep Focus for APD Candidates:
    1. There are of course a few basic concepts you need to know.. the most obvious one definitely be Profitability. Brush up also on your basic math
    2. Beyond the above, the most important thing to do is work on your problem solving fundamentals - this trumps any business knowledge
  3. Language Dynamics: How are interviews typically split between French and English in the France offices for fully bilingual candidates?
    1. This varies from office to office and over time policies have changed, but generally for offices where work is done in the local language, you can expect at least 50% of your interviews to be done in the local language, if not 100%
  4. McKinsey France Specifics
    1. From a casing POV, I would not think so. Sure there may be some case topic differences but that is really not material... problem solving is problem solving

Hi,

I started my career in consulting in France, so happy to share my perspective.

  1. The screening call is mostly about fit and motivation. Expect a walk through your CV and the standard HR questions (why consulting, why McK, why Paris, why the move from medicine).
  2. For APDs, the main gap is typically commercial fluency, so how companies make money (revenue, cost, margin, a simple P&L) and operate (sourcing, production, delivery), plus quick business maths. In terms of case types I'd focus on the standard ones (profitability, growth, market entry, market sizing, pricing, operations). I would do a decent number of interviewer-led cases with peers first.
  3. I would expect the process to run fully in French, so prepare your case vocabulary and your PEI stories in French rather than translating on the fly. But do confirm with HR during your screening call.
  4. Not much of a local difference here. The standard approach applies, and among MBB, McKinsey is actually the one that personalises the case the least, so your US/UK prep materials will serve you well.

Feel free to DM me if you want to discuss any of this or share perspectives on how to best prep for your interviews.

hey there :)

Your MD and MPH background can actually be a strong fit for McKinsey, particularly given the healthcare and public health exposure. For the recruiter call, I’d prepare a very clear story around why consulting, why McKinsey, and why France, rather than trying to demonstrate lots of business knowledge.

For preparation, focus on the core case fundamentals: structuring, quantitative reasoning, interpreting exhibits and synthesising your answer. You absolutely don’t need an MBA background. For the language, I’d be comfortable interviewing in both French and English, as the exact mix can depend on the interviewer and case.

I wouldn’t overthink France specific casing differences either. The core McKinsey interview approach remains the same, although being able to communicate naturally and confidently in French is obviously important.

Good luck with the process, and feel free to reach out if you’d like to practise your McKinsey cases or PEI. Best, Alessa :)

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on invitation from McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, the recruiter screening call is normally a 30-minute conversation. Expect questions on your motivation for consulting and for McKinsey France, a short walk through your resume, your timeline and some logistics. As an APD candidate, be ready to explain in simple words why you move from medicine and public health into consulting.
  • Moreover, for your interview preparation, I would strongly advise you to focus on the business fundamentals that APD candidates usually miss. You do not need MBA knowledge, but you need a basic understanding of the world of business. On the language side, candidates for Paris office get interviewed in French.
  • Lastly, the case study and PEI format itself is globally standardized, so do not expect a different interview model in France.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
