mckinsey & company Software Developer Interview - QuantumBlack

Hi All,

I have a pair programming round with the firm and I am confused whether it would be a leetcode style question round (Like the usual DSA round) or will it be it full - stack development round(Backend, Frontend , APIs)

can someone help me?

Thankyou in advance.

Totally understand why you'd be confused about this – the naming of these rounds can be a bit ambiguous, especially at specialized tech arms like QuantumBlack.

For a "pair programming" round at a firm like QuantumBlack, it's typically less about a pure LeetCode-style DSA grind and more about applied problem-solving in a collaborative coding environment. While foundational data structures and algorithms might be implicitly tested, the focus will generally be on your ability to write clean, functional code to solve a specific problem, often one that simulates a real-world scenario they might encounter in their projects.

This means they'll be observing how you approach a problem, your communication style, how you break down requirements, handle edge cases, make design choices, and debug collaboratively. It's usually not a full-stack build-out, but you might work with simulated APIs, existing codebases, or demonstrate proficiency in common frameworks or paradigms relevant to the role.

Your best bet is to practice articulating your thought process clearly while coding, focusing on clean, testable code, and considering practical aspects like error handling and system design.

Hope this helps clarify things for you!

From what I have seen with candidates, the pair programming round at QuantumBlack is not a pure leetcode DSA grind. It leans more towards practical problem solving.

The "pair" part matters. They want to see how you think out loud, collaborate, and write clean code. More "can I work with this person" than "can this person reverse a binary tree under pressure."

  • Ask your recruiter directly. "What does the pair programming round look like?" is a fair question. Good recruiters will give you a helpful steer.
  • Prepare for both but lean practical. Brush up on fundamentals, but focus more on writing clean code for realistic problems than grinding hard leetcode.

Rid,

Reach out to the recruiter.

Regardless of what any of us could answer in this forum, only the recruiter will be able to tell you for sure. They are there to help you and to guide you through the process. So make the best use of them.

Then once the format of the interview becomes clear, this forum might be more useful in helping you figure out how best to prep for the interview.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Reach out to the recruiter.

Regardless of what any of us say here, only the recruiter will be able to tell you for sure. They are there to help you and to guide you through the process... so make the best use of them!

Generally, for QB and specialist roles, the interview will index more on your specific expertise and brainstorming. If you want to ensure you're ready for the brainstorming and case elements of these specialist roles, I'd recommend my coaching packages to help you prepare.

Good luck!

hey there :)

for McKinsey & Company / QuantumBlack software developer interviews, the pair programming round is usually more like a leetcode/DSA style problem rather than full-stack development. they want to see problem-solving, coding clarity, and communication, not building a complete app or API

best,
Alessa :)
