Hey !
Just got done with my round 1 interviews for a non-consulting position, the recuiter has gathered the feedback and they’d like to schedule a time to connect with me to debrief. Does this mean I’m not advancing?
McK recruiter emailed me that they would like to quickly connect for debrief, is this a negative sign ?
Not necessarily.
At McKinsey & Company, recruiters often use “debrief” language for both:
- positive updates / next steps
- and rejection feedback
So the wording itself is not a reliable signal.
That said, if they explicitly want to “connect quickly,” it usually means:
- there is a decision already made
- and they want to communicate it personally rather than by automated email
I would not try to read too much into it before the call.
Also, for non-consulting roles especially, processes and communication styles can vary quite a bit compared to classic consulting recruiting.
If you were clearly moving forward, the email usually says "next round" with concrete scheduling. The "debrief" framing suggests a conversation, not clear advancement.
Most likely it's a soft rejection with feedback, or a borderline conversation. Less likely but possible, it's a positive next step where they want to discuss specifics.
Walk in neutral. Don't assume rejection or offer. Have thoughtful questions ready. If it's rejection, ask for specific feedback gracefully, don't get defensive. If positive, get clear on next steps.
Keep other pipelines moving regardless.
Good luck.
Hi there,
No, it doesn't necessarily mean that.
You could've also passed, and they want to give you feedback on how the first round went and to align when to have the second round.
Don't assume the worst. Have a chat with them and then take it from there.
If indeed it's a rejection, then it would be useful to understand what the feedback is so you can work on it for future interviews.
Hope you get good news!
Best,
Cristian
hi there!
A recruiter asking to “quickly connect for a debrief” is not automatically negative. McKinsey recruiters use the same wording for both outcomes. For non‑consulting roles especially, they often prefer to deliver results live rather than by email. The only real signal is how fast they reached out, quick outreach usually means your file is still active. So don’t assume rejection; it simply means they want to close the loop with you directly.
