Hi All. What should I wear to a virtual McK London interview? Is a shirt with quarter zip appropriate or should I wear a suit / shirt? TIA!
MBB London virtual interview dress code
Quarter zip. Too casual in my view.
Minimum: formal shirt, no tie needed.
Safe choice: shirt + blazer. Looks sharp on camera without going full suit.
Rule of thumb: dress one level up, not down. Quarter zip reads startup, not MBB.
If HR sent interview instructions, check those first. Otherwise, default to blazer + shirt.
It's a totally fair question, and one many candidates wonder about with virtual interviews. While the setup is remote, the core expectation for an MBB interview, especially with McKinsey London, remains the same: treat it exactly as you would an in-person meeting in their office.
That means a full suit is appropriate. A shirt with a quarter zip, while comfortable and common in some professional settings, isn't the standard for an interview at this level. You want to project utmost professionalism, polish, and respect for the firm and the process. Interviewers are looking for signals of someone ready to represent the firm, and that presentation starts with your attire.
It's always safest to err on the side of formality. Go with the suit, shirt, and tie (or equivalent formal business wear).
All the best with your interview!
McKinsey London still leans formal. The interviewer will size you up in the first few seconds of that video call. Before you even speak, they are asking themselves, "Would I put this person in front of a client?" A quarter zip does not pass that test.
Skip the quarter zip. Wear a proper dress shirt, white or light blue, well-fitted. That is all you need.
No full suit either. On camera, a full suit can look a bit stiff. A clean dress shirt with the top button open. Serious but not overdone.
Also, clean background, good lighting, camera at eye level. A great shirt with bad lighting and a messy room still leaves the wrong impression.
Keep it simple. Dress shirt, tidy setup, good light. Let them focus on your thinking, not your clothes.
Good luck with it.
For consulting interviews always er on the side of formal. Suit for men, button up shirt / blouse and blazer for the ladies.
It is very likely your interviewers will also be in suit (maybe tie) and you don't want to be the casual one.
Good luck!
Hey there :)
For a virtual interview, I would go slightly more formal rather than less. A clean shirt is perfect, ideally with a blazer. A full suit is not necessary, but a shirt with quarter zip can feel a bit too casual for a final or important round.
On camera, simple and polished works best. Neutral colors, good lighting, tidy background. They focus on your thinking, but first impressions still matter.
Best,
Alessa :)
Both are appropriate.
If in doubt, go for too formal than too casual.
Best,
Cristian
