MBB BA/AC opening & deadlines?

Hello,

Applying to the London office and I thought the BA/AC positions at MBBs and others opened Q4 (September/October) each year. Is this true? Or are there multiple recruiting cycles during the year?

Any legitimate/verified info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey,

I think there is a bit of confusion around this topic, which largely stems from the difference between historical trends, the anomalies of recent years, and today’s reality. Let's break it down:

  • The Historical Model: Traditionally, the standard model (which originated in the US) was very linear: you did an internship and then joined full-time in September.

  • The Recent Boom: Over the last few years, however, there was a massive spike in demand and consulting firms grew rapidly. In the offices where I worked, entry dates were actually highly staggered. Depending on the office's needs, we would have cohorts of 10 to 15 people joining every couple of months—September, November, January, March, etc.

  • Today's Reality: Post-COVID, demand has cooled. Many firms realized they over-hired recently and are currently slightly overstaffed. As a result, they are pivoting back toward that initial, traditional model of a September intake.

However, here is the crucial nuance: Even now, the reality is that the majority of new hires do not actually start in September. Maybe 30% to 40% do. From a firm's perspective, it is operationally very difficult to onboard 20 to 30 people with zero experience all at exactly the same time and successfully staff them on projects.

The Takeaway: What typically happens now is that most firms open their recruiting cycles in September (as other coaches have mentioned), but the actual start dates are often staggered and spread out throughout the rest of the year, and some just keep rolling admissions always open. This delayed or staggered entry is something I am seeing a lot right now with my own coachees

Best,

Tom

Hi there,

It depends on the seniority at which you are applying.

Typically, there are two cycles for students: internship recruitment and full-time recruitment.

If you're an experienced hire, you can apply at any time, though that may be limited by the office's needs.

I recommend you:

  • Make a list of the firms you want to target (MBB and beyond)
  • Research each of them in turn for upcoming deadlines (assuming you're clear on the role you want to target)
  • And where you're lacking info try to get in touch with the recruiter to confirm the timeline and that your application is relevant for that role

Best,
Cristian

If you’re recruiting with little to no professional experience, then yes, your understanding is correct. For BA/AC hiring is concentrated in September/October.

If instead you’re applying as an experienced hire (for example with 1–3 years of experience going into a BA/AC role), the process is more flexible and can be closer to rolling, depending on the firm’s needs. That said, at the moment many London offices are slowing down hiring, so timelines can shift a bit. Most likely, you’ll see positions reopening more clearly in the second half of the year.

Hope this helps.

Franco

They run in multiple waves, but the main BA/AC cycle is indeed in late summer to early fall (Aug–Oct), with McKinsey, BCG, and Bain all aligning most of their undergraduate hiring there; that said, all three London offices also run smaller secondary cycles in Jan–Mar, driven by headcount needs, so while Q4 is the big one, it’s not the only chance, meaning you should treat late summer as the priority window while keeping an eye on rolling or off‑cycle postings that London occasionally opens due to its size and demand. If you want, I can help you refine your timeline strategy or review London‑specific recruiting nuances.

You're roughly right, but there's some nuance.

For MBB London BA/AC, the main cycle opens late August to early September and closes late September or early October. There's usually a smaller spring window in January to February, but it's harder to get through.

Tier 2 firms like OC&C, LEK, Oliver Wyman mostly align with autumn, with more flexible spring cycles.

London is the most competitive market in Europe, so apply early. Apply to multiple firms in parallel, don't wait for one decision.

Check the firms' careers pages for verified dates each year.

Good luck.

Generally post the summer in Q3/Q4 as you highlighted post the internship rounds. But always good to reach out to current candidates/recruiter to see if any off cycle needs open up as well.

Good luck !
