Job Security at MBB After Signing Offer – Risk of Rescinded/Delayed Start Dates Due to U.S. Economic Conditions?

I recently signed an offer with McKinsey Digital in the U.S. for a start date of June 20th. Given the current market conditions and concerns about a potential recession, I’m wondering if there is any risk of McKinsey rescinding or delaying start dates for incoming hires.

Additionally, I was planning to leave my current job two weeks before my start date to take a break. However, considering the economic instability, is that a risky move? Would it be safer to stay at my current company as long as possible before transitioning?

Hey there,

It is unlikely your offer would be rescinded. Sometimes offers have been delayed in the past, but it would probably happen more to offers given longer in advance since there is more time to plan.

On leaving the job two weeks before start date, not sure what you mean by 'safer', is it related to McKinsey rescinding/delaying? Can never know for sure, of course, but this should not happen two weeks before someone's start date.

Best,

Maria

Hi there. Thanks for your response! I meant would it be safe to leave my prior (Big 4 firm), 2 weeks before my McKinsey start date? Also would like to follow up and see if it’s a good idea to reach out to my recruiter and raise my concern in regards to start date, etc. given the current economy?

Thanks for clarifying! Yes, it would be strange for them to move the starting date two weeks in advance. You could mention you are planning to take some time off between the two jobs and ask whether the start date is confirmed so you can make your plans.

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer. In terms of your questions:

1) Is any risk of McKinsey rescinding or delaying start dates for incoming hires.

Rescinding: very unlikely. Delaying: that’s possible.

During COVID, I have heard of delays for hiring, but not of offers being rescinded for MBB. On the other hand, I know other companies (Tier 2) have rescinded offers in the past.

2) Considering the economic instability, is that a risky move? Would it be safer to stay at my current company as long as possible before transitioning?

Personally, I would not take the risk and stick to the current company as long as possible just in case, but it is a personal decision.

Good luck!

Francesco

hey!

Congrats on your McKinsey Digital offer! While MBB firms generally honor signed offers, they have delayed start dates in past downturns (e.g., 2020). Full rescindments are rare but not impossible during extreme economic stress.

Taking a two-week break is usually fine, but if you're risk-averse, you might consider shortening it or staying until closer to your start date—just in case. Keep communication open with McKinsey and monitor any internal updates. Overall, the risk is low but not zero.

Hi there,

Congrats on the offer!

I'd say stay with your current company as long as possible but leaving 2 weeks before starting at McKinsey is not an issue as they would not rescind the offer 2 weeks before the starting date but rather much earlier.

Generally, it's unlikely that they will rescind it, but a delay might be in the cards - extremely hard to forecast at the moment with everything that's going on.

Fingers crossed!

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer! Well done!

I'd say it is a rather small possibility that the offer might be rescinded.

As for the 2 weeks break before start - it should be okay given it is really not that long. It is good to take some rest to recharge before you start consulting - life can get quite hectic soon!

Best,

Emily

Hello,

During Covid, most consulting firms in the Middle East delayed offers rather than rescind. The latter carries a reputational risk so generally avoided - I know of very selective cases in the region (e.g., in one case offer was rescinded but MBA tuition costs were covered as a compensation).

There is always some risk of delaying. No risk of rescinding. That would hurt their reputation badly.

Risk of delaying:

1) Is lower in digital roles

2) If they delay most likely they tell you in advance, i.e., with a couple of months notice.
