Is it an automatic rejection if my McKinsey Solve game submitted a few minutes after the deadline?

Starting off by saying I know I should have done this sooner - I unfortunately applied to McKinsey for the business analyst role an hour before the deadline and didn't receive an invite to Solve until the next day (my internship company took me abroad that day and couldn't do it until now).

I started it in the last window. There was an insane amount of glitches due to the graphics including my laptop being completely frozen and overheating. As a result, my Solve didn't submit until 12:04am with the deadline being 11:59pm of the previous day.

I assume it is an automatic rejection but thought I would ask on here. Not majorly unhappy as I feel like I would have gotten rejected anyway + BCG/Bain seems like a better fit for me but at the same time, I feel as though I have wasted an application and wanted to try my luck with McKinsey again.

Hi,

A few minutes past the deadline usually isn’t an automatic rejection, especially if there were technical issues. McKinsey’s systems flag late submissions, but recruiters can manually override that if you email them right away explaining what happened. Just mention the glitches and timestamp issue as they're likely to have seen it before. Even if they don’t reopen it, it’s not the end as you can reapply in the next cycle without penalty. So definitely worth a quick message to recruiting.

Sorry to hear about that.

I wouldn't assume it's an automatic rejection.

I would send a polite email to the recruiter explaining the situation and asking for their understanding. If you're a good candidate, they have no interest in kicking you out of the process for something that it seems you were only partially at fault for.

Best,
