Interview With BCG X for a Data Scientist role

I was wondering if any of the interview rounds have a standard management consulting case. If so, in what round? How difficult would that case be, and how much does it weigh in the overall hiring decision?

I am aware that it was certainly conducted in historical interviews but I am not sure if it has changed recently.

Hello there,

First of all, congratulations on being invited for the interview!

Usually there is one round with a technical assessment and a technical business case, followed by another round with a typical business case and fit interviews. A similar post to yours with additional information can be found here.

Good luck!

Best,

Mari

Hi,

The first round focuses on technical knowlegde/case. A more standard consulting case is conducted in a second round. The case is less rigid for this position, while it's still an essential part of the overall interview assessment.

Yes, BCG X interviews for Data Scientist roles typically include a business case, though it is often tailored to a technical or data-driven context rather than a traditional MBB-style strategy case.

Round 1 may focus more on technical skills (e.g. ML, Python, modeling)
Later rounds (Round 2 or final) often include a light business case, typically less abstract than generalist consulting and more tied to data application and impact
• The case is used to assess business thinking, communication, and structured problem-solving, not just analytics

It’s not the main filter, but strong performance can set you apart.

Let me know if you want a sample case type or practice tips.

Best of luck!

Hey there 😊

great that you’re thinking ahead! Yes, at BCG X for Data Scientist roles, it's still quite common to get a business case-style round, often in the later stages (e.g. 2nd or final round). It's usually lighter than classic MBB cases, but still tests problem-solving, communication, and business sense 📊🧠

It’s not the main focus (tech & modeling weigh more), but doing well shows you're more than just technical – and that really boosts your profile 💼✨

Happy to coach you through a hybrid case to get you confident on both angles! 💪

Best, Alessa
