Internal transfer memo review

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for support in reviewing two transfer memos I’m preparing for an internal office move within my firm. This application is important to me, and I want to ensure the narrative is as strong and differentiated as possible, given the competitive nature of the process.

I’m ideally looking for someone who:

  • Is Manager level or above, preferably with Tier 1 consulting experience
  • Is comfortable providing direct edits as needed and several rounds of iterations
  • Has availability to iterate with me and help refine the memos by Wednesday
  • Charges $100  for their time to help shape this up

Please comment below if interested and I will reach out via direct message.

Thank you in advance!

Hi there,

I am happy to help. I have experience in transfer memos as I myself transferred across two Middle East offices with McKinsey and have helped numerous other colleagues with their transfer memos during my time in McKinsey. Please reach out if you want to chat.

Regards,

I completely get it – internal transfers are a huge deal, and getting your narrative just right for those memos feels incredibly important, especially with the competition. It's smart to want to put your best foot forward.

Here’s a bit of an insider perspective on how these often play out: while the memo is necessary, its primary role is often to formalize and justify a decision that's already largely been shaped. The real driver for internal transfers, especially to competitive offices or practices, almost always boils down to senior-level sponsorship and headcount alignment. A beautifully crafted memo is great, but it usually comes second to a partner or senior manager in the target office actively wanting you and having the budget/need for your skillset.

So, my advice isn't to necessarily pay an external consultant to perfect the memo. While they can help with structure and prose, they won't have the critical firm-specific context or internal relationships. Instead, invest your time in connecting directly with partners, managers, and even senior consultants in your target office. Understand their current project pipeline, their immediate hiring needs, and see if you can get someone to champion your application internally. That direct advocacy is far more impactful than any words on a page alone.

Hope this helps you navigate the process effectively!

I would make it slightly sharper and more senior in tone, for example: I am preparing two internal transfer memos for a competitive office move and am looking for a Manager level or above consultant, ideally with Tier 1 experience, who can provide hands on edits and iterate with me through several drafts before Wednesday. I am looking for direct, candid feedback to help strengthen positioning and differentiation, and I am offering 100 dollars for dedicated review time. Please comment below if interested and I will follow up via direct message.
