I got a McKinsey offer, is it possible to negotiate at all the salary?

I would like to push for a a small increase as I have experience of 1 year in the position at a boutique and I was getting better pay. Is this risky?

Can I lose my offer if I ask for a bit more?

Congrats on the offer!

At MBB there's no negotiation for base & bonus - it's standardized. You can try and ask for a signing bonus though, but that is not guaranteed.

Hi there,

congratulations on the offer!

Usually, salaries and bonuses are fixed at MBB and there is no negotiation involved even if you have a bit of experience. Generally, if they believe you can be an experienced hire, they would offer you for a higher role.

You can try asking for a signing bonus, if they have anything like that.

Best,

Giulia

There's a defined value for each rank, so the base salary (and variable) are not negotiable.

What is negotiable is the sign up bonus - you should be able to use that argument to claim a sign up bonus that covers the difference.

Hi there,

Congrats on the offer!

McKinsey salaries are usually standardized by role and level, so there’s very little room to negotiate base pay and even candidates with prior experience typically come in at the set band. The good news is you won’t lose your offer just by asking politely, but it’s worth knowing the answer will almost certainly be “no.” Instead, you can explore other things like signing bonus, start date, or relocation support instead (if relevant).

Congrats on your McKinsey offer!

Salaries at MBB are usually set in fairly strict bands by role and office, so there isn’t much room to negotiate base pay. That said, it’s not risky to ask once in a polite and professional way. The worst case is they say no, but they won’t pull your offer just for asking.

Best of luck!

You won't lose the offer as long as you're professional about it.

However, the chances of being successful are virtually nonexistent. Compensation works on salary bands that depend on the role. So everybody at that role gets the same compensation, sometimes with small differences that have to do with tenure, and then performance (which influences the bonus).

Where typically there is some space for negotiation is the signing bonus or the relocation bonus. If those apply in your case and office, then it's worth discussing them with HR.

If you have any other questions, feel free to drop me a line.

Best,
Cristian

Hey there :)

Congrats on the offer! McKinsey salaries are standardized by role and office, so there’s very little room to negotiate. Asking for more usually won’t get traction and could risk coming across poorly, but you won’t lose your offer just for politely asking. If compensation is a concern, you could explore signing bonus, start date, or relocation support instead.

best, Alessa :)

Hi there,

congratulations. The base salary and bonus range are typically standardized for each career level at all large consulting firms. Those are not negotiable. You could try to negotiate a signing bonus or a relocation compensation (if applicable).

Best of luck

Congratulations on the offer! While the salaries are usually fixed, you could negotiate on other aspects such as signing bonus or non-financial elements as others have outlined. Upon joning, another thing you can consider is making your intentions known for a fast-track promotion. This will not only help you leverage your prior experience but also achieve the salary increase that you are looking for sooner rather than later.
