You should either receive a direct link (if someone referred you in the system), or be told to apply via a portal (if a Partner or HR/Recruiter asks you to and says they'll keep an eye out for your application).
If you are referred to McKinsey, please wait for the email that says someone has referred you and to apply using this link before submitting an application. That ties your application to the referral and will ensure it will be looked at more closely. Do not apply formally on the website before that.
