Consulting Consulting

How can I transition from B.Com + Data Analytics to MBB consulting through internships and a top MBA?

I’m currently in my 2nd year of B.Com. with a specialization in Data Analytics, but my long-term goal is to pursue management or strategy consulting and eventually join an MBB firm. I’m preparing for CAT and SAT to target top business schools in India or abroad. I’m not particularly interested in data analysis as a career, but want to retain it as a valuable skill. What internship/internships role should I target , and what roadmap would you recommend?

Hi Aryan,

I will take your questions one by one.

1) On internships, I would aim for the strongest brand names you can get, in a consulting firm including Tier 2 and boutique ones, or in a large company in a strategy or business role. What recruiters look for in those experiences is proof that you performed above average and developed the skills consulting requires, so pick roles where you can show impact and problem solving.

2) On the roadmap, MBB recruiting is very competitive and you will compete with people who have top grades, strong internships and international exposure on top of extracurriculars, so the answer is to combine all of them. If you have to prioritize, grades come first because they are the strongest signal of excellence, then the brand names on your internships, then a consulting club or international exposure depending on where you want to work.

On the MBA, I would not build the whole plan around it at this stage; you can already apply to MBB as a Business Analyst after your degree, and a top MBA works best later as a career reset, because what it really gives you is access to on-campus recruiting. If MBB does not work out straight after the degree, a couple of years in a Tier 2 firm or a strong corporate role followed by a top MBA is a very common route.

If you want a pair of external eyes on your specific situation and more tailor made suggestions, feel free to write to me.

Best,

Franco

More than "sector" you really have to think role.

You need internships that help you demonstrate the skills MBB actually cares about:

  • Problem-solving
  • Team-work
  • Leadership
  • Project management
  • Client / stakeholder management
  • Communication skills

So I'd prioritize internships roughly around strategy / management consulting, boutique consulting, Big 4 consulting, in-house strategy, business operations, corporate development / M&A, etc.

Data analytics is absolutely useful, but if you don't want to be a data analyst, don't optimize your entire profile around analytics. Keep it as a skill that differentiates you rather than making it your career.

You're also only in your 2nd year. Don't build your entire plan around “I'll get an MBA and then get MBB.” Start building the profile now:

  1. Get consulting-relevant internships
  2. Get leadership experience
  3. Do case competitions / experiential consulting where possible
  4. Network
  5. Build a strong CV
  6. Apply broadly, not just to MBB

Then see where you are after undergrad. The MBA can be an accelerator later if you need it. It shouldn't be the thing you're waiting for before you start.

For a full end-to-end roadmap, I'd also look at my 360° Consulting Recruiting Course.

Hey Aryan,

I’d try to get an internship in strategy consulting, business development or corporate strategy. These would give you a much better idea of what consulting actually looks like than a pure data analytics role. Your analytics background is still a plus, especially when it comes to solving business problems.

Since you’re only in your second year, I’d focus on getting good grades, building leadership experience and trying to land a solid internship. You can work towards a top MBA later, but there’s no need to rush into planning every step now.

Best, Alessa :)

Hi Aryan,

The degree that you're doing is already great because it helps you build analytical skills and it's also a good signal for consulting employers.

In short, what should you focus on? Doing any sort of internships that are in consulting or consulting-related roles. Even if you don't find something in an actual consulting firm, you should try to identify roles where you would be able to develop, exhibit, and demonstrate consulting skills (problem-solving, team work, top down communication, etc.).

One simple entry point is the consulting club at your university and the chance to do any pro-bono consulting.

Best,
Cristian

Build a structure/plan that really fits your interests and needs. I can not recommend to focus too much on what is popular now. The needs might shift quickly so try to find a match with what you are excited about and where you thrive AND what is leading in your desired direction. If you are not passionate about the topic, they will notice.

So look for topics and companies that are helpful with both. Of course consultant internships are very helpful to build skills and see if you like it, where you have growth opportunities etc.
