Hired as MBB Associate without an MBA?

Hi, I am looking to apply to MBB at the Associate/Consultant level. Just wondering how strict MBB firms are regarding the MBA requirement for Associate/Consultant level position? Is it reasonable to aim for that position without an MBA?

For context, I have 3 years of work experience in a regulatory/risk role, a Master's in Finance and a CFA.

Entering at the typical post-MBA level (Consultant at BCG, Associate at McK) will be challenging. It could have been on the table if you had more experience.

You could try to thrash it out with your referee to slot you in the Consultant level based on your Masters.

I would recommend to start at the lower-level. Your profile will slot-in nicely, with reasonable chances of success, a runway of 1.5-2 years to make mistakes and learn from them, and then finally become a strong Consultant.

Compare this to aiming straight for Consultant position. The interview bar is going to be more challenging. Assuming you make it through, the on-the-job bar will also appear insanely challenging (especially since your experience is regulatory/risk), leaving you with little-to-no room for learning and improving - and always playing catchup in panic.

The CFA won't help much.

Hi there,

Q: Just wondering how strict MBB firms are regarding the MBA requirement for Associate/Consultant level position?

Without an MBA and with 3 years of experience, in most countries you will qualify for a Senior Analyst/Junior Associate (McKinsey), Senior Associate (BCG/Bain) position.

You can usually target an Associate (McKinsey) or Consultant (BCG/Bain) position if you have an MBA or 5+ years of experience.

If you have someone who is referring you, you can ask them to check with HR as well.

Good luck!

Hi there,

You don't necessarily need an MBA to be hired into MBB. You'd be following the experienced hired recruiting processes. Key is to demonstrate that you have the qualities and skillsets that make you fit for the job.

3 years might be a bit short to be considered for Associate in McK / Consultant in Bain and BCG, though. It is likely they might consider you for a 2nd year BA / Associate or Senior Associate.

Best,

Emily
