FTI Consulting Case Interview

Hi All,

I have an upcoming case interview for the Business transformation practise in FTI. Looking to prepare for this type of cases as I suspect they will not fall under the general management consulting cases (Profitability, Market Entry ...). Does anyone have any further insights or type of cases to focus on ?

Thanks,

These interviews are usually operational and execution focused, not classic profitability or market entry. Expect themes like cost reduction, turnaround, post merger integration, org redesign, or performance improvement within a function. The question is rarely just “what is the problem?” It is “how would you fix it, step by step?”

They are testing practicality. Can you translate analysis into a clear 90 day plan? Do you understand trade offs, stakeholder pushback, governance, KPIs? Broad strategy talk without concrete actions does not score well here.

A common mistake is answering like it is a pure strategy case. High level frameworks, generic ideas, no implementation detail. In transformation, detail matters. Who owns what, what happens first, how savings are tracked, what risks could derail the plan.

To prepare, focus on cost takeout, turnaround, and integration cases. After solving the core issue, always add a simple implementation roadmap with milestones and risks. That extra layer is often what separates strong candidates.

hi!

expect cases that are more operational and implementation focused rather than classic market entry or pure strategy, often centered around cost reduction, performance improvement, cash flow stabilization, post merger integration, or organizational redesign, with a strong emphasis on practicality and impact. They will likely test whether you can diagnose root causes, prioritize initiatives, think through execution risks, and translate analysis into an actionable roadmap, so I would practice profitability and cost cases but push yourself to go deeper into operational levers, working capital, headcount, procurement, and change management, and be ready to discuss how you would actually implement recommendations, not just what to do.

You're absolutely right to anticipate a different angle for FTI's Business Transformation cases compared to typical general management consulting. FTI often steps in when organizations are facing significant operational challenges, financial distress, or require deep restructuring, meaning the cases move beyond broad strategic questions.

You'll likely encounter scenarios focused on operational efficiency, cost reduction, organizational design, carve-outs, post-merger integration, or turnaround management. The emphasis won't just be on what to do, but how to implement and drive change within an existing, often complex, operational environment. Be ready to dive into the practicalities and granular details of execution.

To prepare, focus on frameworks that address process optimization, supply chain restructuring, cost transformation, and change management. Practice dissecting an organization's current state, identifying critical bottlenecks, and proposing concrete, actionable solutions. Your ability to ask precise clarifying questions about the operational context will be key.

Good luck with your interview!

Do reach out to the recruiter to confirm what sort of cases you'll be receiving in the interview.

It's not a given that they'll be industry-specific. And once you clarify the expectations, you'll be better able to prep for the interview.

Best,
Cristian
