Fit questions

Hello, I hope you’re all doing well.

I had a quick question regarding the fit interview at MBB. Is it acceptable to take a few seconds — say, up to 20 seconds — to think before answering a question? I’d like to ensure I have time to gather my thoughts and structure my response properly.

Of course, I understand that fit questions should be prepared in advance, but I’m wondering if it’s still appropriate to take a short pause after each question to reflect and make sure I address it clearly and effectively.

Thank you!

Hi there,

Yes — it’s completely acceptable, and in fact often advisable, to pause for a few seconds before answering fit questions. At MBB, interviewers expect you to give structured, thoughtful responses rather than rushing into an answer. A short pause of 5–10 seconds is common; even 15–20 seconds is fine if you use it purposefully (e.g., to jot down a quick structure).

What’s important is how you manage the pause:

  • Stay confident — don’t look flustered or apologetic. You can say something like, “That’s a great question, let me take a moment to structure my thoughts.”
  • Keep it concise — long silences without explanation can feel awkward. Frame the pause as you preparing to answer clearly.
  • Use it for structure — especially for “tell me about yourself,” “why consulting,” or story-based questions (leadership, challenge, conflict). A quick outline in your head helps keep your answer sharp.

So yes, short reflection is not only acceptable but shows maturity and presence of mind. Just avoid overdoing it after every single question — it should feel natural, not scripted.

Happy to help you prep – feel free to reach out.

Best,

Evelina

Yes.

In general, faster is always better.  That being said, if you need time, you take it.

In this case, I always recommend taking a few seconds at least.  The reason is that candidates often get very excited about telling their story, so it's good to build a habit of pausing to make sure you've heard the full question before you answer it.

Best of luck!

Hi!

Sure, just don’t take too long as it is expected for you to have done your homework and to know your own past relevant stories. Not sure what your approach will be, usually I recommend my clients to memorize and have a documented story for each dimension as this is a high stakes situation.

Good luck!

Best,

Mari

Hey there :)

Yes, totally fine to pause a few seconds before answering fit questions. It actually shows composure and that you want to give a structured response. Just don’t overdo it .. 5–10 seconds is natural, 20 can feel long unless you acknowledge it with something like “let me take a moment to think.”

best, Alessa :)

Hey,

it is usually fair to take a few seconds (let's say up to 10) before answering fit questions. It might even strengthen your answers and give them more weight.

However, I would advise you not taking too long. It is not a framework that you need to develop after all.

Best,
Lukas

I believe it is perfectly fine to take some time to collect your thoughts.
