Experience of MF PE Portfolio Operations vs MBB Consulting?

What would be the key differences between being part of a MF PE Portfolio Operations team vs working in MBB Consulting? (this can be in terms of WLB, travel, career progression, comp, smaller/bigger teams, level of quant vs qual, more "client/company" facing vs less social, cadence in change of projects, mentorship levels, up or out culture, constant feedback, etc)

My experience is in MBB, but I feel I am due for a change (I'm still at the junior level, so trying to try different things in my career). I'm curious to learn what the PE Port Ops experience is like

hey!

Thanks for sharing your situation! Having worked in MBB, you’ll find PE portfolio operations offers deeper, longer-term ownership of projects, fewer travel demands, smaller teams focused on execution, and a blend of quantitative analysis with hands-on implementation. Feedback tends to be more informal, career paths flatter but often lead into senior operating roles, and work-life balance can improve outside deal peaks. It’s a chance to move from strategy design into real operational impact!

Good luck with whichever path you choose!

Career paths tend to be flatter unless its at a megafund right? Or even there there's not really a set promotion timeline
