Date Discrepancy in Resume - Offer Rescinded?

hi all,

i have over 10 years experience in total. i have just received an offer from MBB firm and the background check has kicked off. I realized now, that I made a mistake in my CV.

in one of the jobs, i put June 2023 - 2025, When i actually worked from June 2023 to Sept 2024. So there is a 3/4 month discrepancy. It was an honest mistake, and I wanted to put 2024 (no month - as when creating resume I geniunely forgot)

I did, however, put 2025 - Present in my next job. Every other date and month in the 10 year career is correct. Will this lead to the offer being withdrawn?

Hi,

I would not panic about this. Based on my experience, what actually gets an offer rescinded is deliberate misrepresentation, not one end-date that is off by a few months while everything else across ten years is correct.

The one thing I would do is get ahead of it by sending your recruiter a short note saying you reviewed your CV, spotted that one role should read June 2023 to Sept 2024, and wanted to flag it yourself.

Hope it helps and feel free to DM me if you want to discuss this more in depth.

Best,

Federico

Thank you! I am a bit concerned - will flagging it seem like I deliberately misled them after the interview process was complete, when this was not my intention at all?

It really depends on how you frame it. If you do that naturally I do not think there is any risk (at the end you have 10 years of experience and that’s just few months). But if that worries you, you can also let the process run and be ready to explain it if that comes up.

Hi,

Don't worry about this one. Background checks are looking for people who invented a job, inflated a title or hid a gap. A few months on one date, with everything else across ten years correct, is not that. If it gets flagged and verified, they will correct it, and the process moves on.

Also worth checking your LinkedIn matches the corrected dates, since that's often what the verification is compared against.

An honest date overlap mistake will not lead to an offer being rescinded.

Background check teams look for intentional fraud, fabricated titles, or padded employment gaps. A transparent timeline contradiction, where job B starts in 2025 while job A ends in 2025 instead of late 2024, is clearly a typographical error.

Be proactive. Contact the background check vendor or your HR coordinator immediately before they flag it to you. State that you noticed a formatting typo on your resume dates for that role, provide the exact employment dates (June 2023 to September 2024), and offer to provide updated documentation or W-2s/tax forms if needed.

Framing it as a self-reported clerical error resolves the discrepancy smoothly without risking your offer.

Feel free to reach out if you want to discuss your situation further.

I highly doubt so. If it comes up, you can just provide the right information and clarify it.
