Chances at MBB - CV check

I’d like your view on whether my CV could pass MBB screening.

I have a dual degree in Architecture & Engineering from a Russell Group university (2:1) and a few years of junior roles in engineering/architecture across different countries. My background isn’t in consulting, but I can translate problem-solving and creative thinking into the field.

My concern is the non-target school, 2:1 grade, and lack of direct consulting or strongly quantifiable achievements. With this profile, is there a realistic chance at MBB?

Hello,

Based on my experience, I have seen non-business professionals get into MBB, but usually after an MBA.

That said, I see 2 potential paths into MBB based on your situation:

1. Do a top-tier MBA: this will help you acquire business sense, improve your educational background and expand your business network; plus, MBB (and many other outstanding employers) usually recruit directly from MBAs

2. If MBA is out of the equation, the only path I see to get your foot in the door is through networking/ referrals

Hi there,

You’re right that MBB CV screens are tough, and things like a non-target school etc. will make it harder. Most people that break into consulting, do so at particular points of their career, such as fresh grad or post-MBA. If you're trying to break into consulting outside of these points, then the key is to make your CV “consulting-ready” (leadership, measurable impact, cross-functional work), prep cases well, and build referrals (really important) to help bypass the filter. It’s not easy, but definitely possible if you strengthen those areas.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

To be realistic, your odds are lower than those of candidates from target schools with top grades and prior consulting exposure. That said, they are not zero. With a 2:1 from a Russell Group university and solid international experience, you are in a range where a well-crafted CV plus strong referrals could get you past screening, but you should expect it to be an uphill climb. Think of it more as “possible but competitive” rather than “probable.”

If MBB is your top goal, it is worth applying, but also keep strong Tier-2 and boutique firms in your strategy to maximize chances. With the right positioning, those can be excellent stepping stones.

Best of luck!
