Hi everyone! I have an upcoming interview with Bains internal PPK practice, specifically related to product. Would the case be specific to product or should I prep more general cases? Its a more experienced hire position
Case Interviews for internal roles
Hi,
I would expect a case focused on product specifically, testing your sector specific knowledge, as well as making sure that you broadly think as a consultant (same skillset tested, even though on a lighter mode and with a shorter case).
Feel free to DM me if you want to do a mock interview; I’ve worked extensively with PPK’s BCG equivalent, helped candidates preparing for it and spent >10 years in consumer.
Best,
Federico
Hi there,
Given that this is an internal PPK role specifically related to product, I would expect product to feature heavily. But do not prepare only for product.
The core skills are still the same: structuring an ambiguous problem, identifying the right analyses, working with data, making tradeoffs, and communicating a clear recommendation.
Prepare general cases so those fundamentals remain sharp, then overindex on product questions: customer needs, value proposition, prioritization, product metrics, launch, adoption, and roadmap tradeoffs.
Because it is an experienced hire role, be ready to draw on your own experience and explain how you would approach a messy product decision in practice.
The honest answer is that nobody outside the interview team can tell you the exact format. Ask the recruiter whether it is a full case, a shorter mini case, or an expertise discussion, then be ready for any of them.
Good luck!

Typically I've seen various levels of "cases" used by Bain's internal teams. They can vary in depth and complexity - I would assume they will have way more to do with the product or practice area, but still require you to show structured & critical thinking, good answer first communication, and ability to handle tricky questions / curve-balls. Happy to help if you need more practice just let me know!
My sense is for an internal role - especially if you are managing knowledge rather than being client facing, it will be more a test of your topical knowledge than the typical generalist case interview.
I would suggest to look at the JD of the role and on that basis derive what you will best tested on :)

Hey there :)
For this role, I’d prepare primarily for general case fundamentals, but expect the case to be tailored to the product context. You could see topics like product strategy, pricing, customer segmentation or product development.
I’d spend most of your time on structuring, quantitative analysis and synthesis, while also being comfortable discussing your own product experience and how you’d approach product related problems.
Good luck, and feel free to reach out if you want to practise. Best, Alessa :)
Hi there,
First of all, congratulations on the invitation from Bain!
I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:
- Contrary to the guesses of other coaches, I would stronlgy advise you to reach out to the recruiter immediately and inquire about it, since only they will know for certain.
If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming Bain interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.
Best,
Hagen
Hi there,
That's a great question, but the most reliable answer you'll get from the actual recruiter.
From my experience of working with candidates preparing for specialist roles, I've seen it both ways - cases from that specific industry (when they were trying to also assess the candidate's knowledge) or unrelated to the candidate's area of interest (to rather assess the candidate's business acumen and transferrable consulting skills).
In short, ask the recruiter so you know what to actually prepare.
Best,
Cristian
