Case Coaching

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to start my second cycle of MBB applications in a few months (I reached R2 for one firm in my previous cycle and stopped after R1 for two others).

I noticed some coaches offer a free intro call, and I’m wondering what that typically includes. Is it more of a diagnostic session where coaches assess coachee's current level and suggest a prep plan, or more of a general intro to their coaching style and offerings?

Also, how many sessions did coachee typically take to see noticeable improvement?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

A free intro call with a coach is usually a short session (15 minutes) meant to understand where you currently stand, what your goals are, and what kind of support you need. Most coaches will ask about your previous interview experience, how you approach cases, and where you feel least confident. They’ll then outline a potential prep plan and explain their coaching style so you can decide if it’s a good fit. It’s not typically a full diagnostic case session, because that would be challenging in just 15'. The best option for that would be to book a regular session for that, so you can also receive detailed feedback.

In terms of results, people usually start seeing clear improvement after 3–5 focused sessions, especially if they practice between sessions. Those with prior interview experience (like you) often progress faster because they already know the basics and can focus on refining structure, synthesis, and communication.
