Hi All,
did anyone give the BCG X forward deployed AI Scientist virtual interview
If so what did they ask and what shall I do to pass this round?
BCG vurtual one way interview for forward deployed AI Scientist
Hi there,
I actually haven't heard of this one, but, given what they've said, you should be ready for:
1) Fit - why consulting, etc.
2) Quant/analytics skills similar to Bain SOVA, PST, Hirevue, etc. - leverage resources across all of these to practice
These two articles should also help:
1. How to Shift Your Mindset to Ace the Case
2. Dos and Don'ts in a Case Interview
When you reach the live interview stage, here's a relevant technology case for you: BCG Platinion / McKinsey Digital / Monitor: Roma Solutions.
Hi there,
One step I'd take is to reach out to the recruiter and get as much info on the format of the interview as possible. A few questions to ask:
- What is the format of the interview?
- How long does it take?
- Is there a fit component? Is it focused on motivational questions, situational or story-based?
- Will the interview test for knowledge or skills or both?
- Will knowledge be assessed through stories from past experience or through the case component?
- Will the case component be focused specifically on AI?
- etc.
Once this becomes clear, then reach out and I'm happy to give more tailored advice.
Best,
Cristian
Hi there,
I also have not heard of this type of format so far, but here are some thoughts on it.
The hardest thing about a one way round is not the questions, it is that nobody reacts to you. Every habit you have of reading an interviewer and adjusting stops working, and the recording keeps whatever you did with the silence. That is what I would prepare first.
I would also not spend long hunting for what they asked. Forward deployed is the client facing half of a technical job, so a screen like this tends to test whether someone technical can be put in front of a client, not whether you know the material.
A few drills I use with coachees before a recorded round:
- Record yourself explaining a model you have built to someone who cannot read code, in 90 seconds, then watch it back. Do that on three different projects.
- Answer first, then support. State your position in one sentence, give two or three reasons, then stop talking even if the timer is still running. Filling the time is the most common way these go wrong.
- Read the mechanics off the invitation itself: preparation time per question, recording length and how many retakes you get. Decide in advance what would justify spending one, because otherwise they go on wording.
- Have one project ready end to end as a business story: the objective, why machine learning was the right tool, the data, the metric you moved and what could break in deployment.
BCG's own interview process page describes a skills interview, a case interview and a team interview and says nothing about a recorded round, so I would not read this one as a replacement for any of them. An older thread on this exact role sets out what candidates saw at the later stages, worth reading now rather than after you pass.
The exact one-way interview format is role-specific, so ask recruiting about the number of questions, response time, preparation time and whether technical coding or case work is included. Do not rely on reports from a different BCG role.
Prepare four answer areas. First, why BCG X and why a Forward Deployed AI Scientist role. Second, one example where you moved an AI or data product from prototype into a real operating environment. Third, a technical trade-off you made around model quality, latency, cost, data or reliability. Fourth, a difficult stakeholder situation where you translated between technical and business teams. Include what you personally did and the measurable result.
Practise recorded answers under the likely time limit. Lead with the answer, give only the necessary context, explain the decision and close with the result or lesson. Test the camera, audio and connection beforehand. If a technical assessment follows, prepare from the current job description rather than guessing from the video stage.
Hey there :)
For a BCG X Forward Deployed AI Scientist role, I’d expect the virtual interview to focus heavily on your technical background, applied AI experience and how you approach real client problems. Be ready to explain your projects clearly, including the choices you made, tradeoffs and measurable impact.
I’d also prepare for questions around ML fundamentals, experimentation, data and deployment, plus behavioral questions around working with clients and multidisciplinary teams. For this type of role, being able to communicate technical concepts clearly is just as important as knowing the theory.
Best, Alessa :)
