BCG standby/waitlist?

So I just had a final round for a smaller USA BCG office (think Miami, Denver, Nashville, Austin, etc.) for a full-time associate position. After the final round, I recieved a rejection email but was called the next day by a partner in the office who didn’t interview me. I was told that I had a good superday performance but they were unable to give me an offer because things in consulting are “weird” right now. I was told to update them if I get any other offers and to reach back out during my graduation time. Now I’m confused as to where I stand. Are they waiting to see how the market performs throughout the year and if they have more demand for hiring later on or maybe for someone to renege? My plan is to maintain contact/grab coffee with the partners who interviewed me as well as some of the associates I networked with over the year, but other than that is there anything else I could/should do? I received an investment banking offer recently for FT as well and quite frankly only applied to the MBB for consulting but didn’t get interviews elsewhere. I’m worried about telling them about my IB offer as I don’t want to pressure them into giving me a final no, because it seems like I’m in a pseudo-waitlist/maybe position. Should I maybe recruit for smaller T2s and boutiques and try to leverage that? I’ve never really heard about this happening to any of my friends or online so I’m not really sure what I should do other than wait. Would appreciate any/all advice. Hope y’all have a great day! :)

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the rejection from BCG!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, unfortunately, you're not on any waitlist, but you were rejected.
  • Moreover, I would advise you to be transparent with them once you’re about to accept another offer. It doesn’t mean pressuring them - it gives them a real trigger to re-check if they can squeeze you in. Not sharing that info could mean they miss the chance to act.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting firm.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

You are not in a wait list. This is very clear. They like you. They would like to extend you an offer, but they don't have an opening for you. What he is saying is that if within a few months you don't have a job, but are about to sign an offer... reach out to him first. At that point he will see if he has an opening now, and if so, might extend you an offer.

So what do you do? Move on with your life, assume you won't get an offer. But if within 2-3 months you are still in the market or about to sign up for someone else, just send him a text / email / quick call to give them an opportunity to reconsider (i.e. to see if the market changed and now they need more people).

Getting another job, recruiting with other firms will not change that. And his message was pointing towards the opposite direction... basically what he is saying is that If after a few months you are still free, let them know.

Hi there,

Good news it that they really liked you, otherwise the partner wouldn’t have reached out otherwise asking you to keep him in the loop on your employment status. Internally, they must not have an opening just yet. I’d just do what they suggested: stay in touch, and if you get an offer you’re thinking of accepting, let them know first so they have the chance to act.

Sorry to hear about this.

It sounds like you had a solid performance, but they couldn't hire any more.

So you should stay in touch with the Partner with whom you spoke, and apply next year ideally with a referral from him.

But since they refused you for now, there's not much that you can do for the immediate next period.

Cristian

Hi there,

From the description, I think you have done well in the interviews; however, they just don't have any more headcount / opening to hire you at this moment, so they have to turn you down.

What do you think of the IB offer, though, would you not want to pursue that? I am not sure T2 / boutique would be good to use as leverage, compared to your IB offer (not sure if it is with a big firm). If your IB offer is from a renowned firm, it might be better than T2/ boutique.

Best,

Emily
