MBB Second Round Redo

Hi Everyone,

I had an MBB final round recently but was not extended an offer. However, apparently it was close enough that I was asked to come back after a waiting period of a few months to redo my second round.

I was interested in hearing some other perspectives on this. I know that there can be a wide range of weird outcomes in an MBB interview, and I was curious if anyone had come across this before. I had a few questions in particular:

1) I'm partially afraid that after the waiting period, the firm will either lose interest or fill all of their availabilty spots and change their mind. Is this a real possibility?

2) If I go ahead and redo my second round, will my prior interview score factor into the offer decision?

3) Will the standards be the same in the second attempt, or higher? I would of course do my best regardless, but it is useful to know what I am up against.

Thanks for the advice!

Hi there,

You're one of the lucky ones! They liked you enough and saw enough potential tha tthey're giving you a second chance!

Fundamentally, you had not prepared enough - you were not polished/ready and you need to get polished/ready. They saw a partially cut/cleaned diamond. You need to make that thing shine.

1) If they're offering you a re-do you should be fine. That said, you can't control this - don't worry about that which you cannot control. Regardless, don't place all your hopes on this role (general rule)

2) in a sense - they're aware of your weakness areas and need to be assured that you have addressed these.

3) Yes. They will be the same.

Hey there,

That is not the worst outcome and happens more than you think.

Now to your questions:

  1. If they offer you a second chance, they will stick to their word (unless we see another financial or economic crisis that halts hiring altogether)
  2. It is important to show consistent strong performance across all interviews, so round 1 and round 2 will be looked at in combination. Not sure how they factor in the first attempt at round 2. However, in practice, this has no impact since you still need to prepare and try to perform as best as you can in your second try here...
  3. The standards would be the same

Now for the preparation:

  1. Keep doing what you have been doing since it seemed to work
  2. Invest some extra time in your perceived weaknesses or weaknesses that have been communicated to you as feedback by the firm.

All the best going forward!

Cheers,

Florian

Evaluation criteria remains standard. Expectations will be higher given you have been through the drill once and must show clear improvements on feedback from last time.

Dont hold out for this role and obviously have other options going in parallel. By all means, give the second attempt after the waiting period. And no, they wont lose interest :). Keep in touch with people in the firm if you managed to make some good connections.

All the best.

Thanks! Is this based on MBB experience?

Hi there,

  1. I don’t think so. Consulting companies are always hiring. Worst case, the bar will be higher because they will have fewer slots available
  2. No, although they may ask something related to your improvement areas in the past
  3. If the position is the same, the standard will be the same

Best,

Francesco

I was in a similar situation although I was asked to have another final round interview the following week.

1. Assuming you are going for a generalist consultant role, I wouldn't worry about spots or change in interest. The model heavily relies on filling the funnel with more new talent

2. For your case, I think they may look at running a fresh final round. Having said that, they will likely still refer to your scores to see if the areas that had been flagged for concern have been adequately addressed

3. I guess you could see it both ways. The standard is higher in the sense that your interviewer will expect you to be a candidate with the potential to get an offer which is why they are calling you back. At the same time, especially at final round, each interviewer will ensure they make a decision based on their own read

Good luck!

Just curious, which office region was this? Europe, North America..? Would be nice to have an option like this in my area too

My impression is that this an extremely uncommon outcome that shouldn't be expected or considered viable. Everyone else I have ever heard from got a definitive yes or no

I'm curious too. It happened with me in Brazil. I've applied for BA but they didn't extend me an offer. But in the same day, the HR give Second Round Redo for Location Analyst (Pre BA).
