BCG interview question

Quick question about first-round BCG interviews in London.

For the first round of back-to-back interviews, are the cases typically candidate-led or interviewer-led? And should we expect a market sizing question, or are they usually just standard case interviews?

Also, should we expect competency/PEI-style questions (e.g., “tell me about a time when you…”) as part of the interview?

Hi,

BCG places a lot of emphasis on a candidate’s ability to drive the conversation, so you should expect to be in the driving seat during the case. Being proactive in structuring the problem and guiding the analysis is a key part of how your performance will be evaluated.

A pure market sizing exercise is quite rare. If market sizing appears, it is usually embedded within a broader case, since a standalone market sizing question only allows the interviewer to evaluate a limited set of skills.

Regarding the fit questions, the interview will almost certainly start with that part. It is usually relatively short but still very important, as it helps the interviewer understand your motivation and how you think about your experiences.

If you need any additional information or help preparing, feel free to reach out. I spent 10 years at BCG and conducted many interviews, including in the London office.

Best,
Franco

Candidate-led or interviewer-led?
Candidate-led. You need to drive the case forward. Typically: prompt, clarifying questions, framework, then you asking questions to unlock the case (they provide data and exhibits), then a final recommendation. Sometimes they'll ask questions — to prod you when stuck or to challenge your thinking.

Market sizing?
Can appear. Not guaranteed. Be ready for it. If it's a weak spot: https://www.preplounge.com/en/shop/prep-guide/master_market_sizing

Fit/PEI questions?
BCG isn't McKinsey PEI. No formal deep-dive behavioral round. Fit questions happen, but keep stories shorter, more natural, and more dynamic than you would for McKinsey. If you want to nail the fit side: https://www.preplounge.com/en/shop/prep-guide/ace_the_case_interview

Now — does any of this change how you prep? Nope! Be ready for anything. If you go in expecting a specific format and it deviates, you'll be thrown. Train well, stay flexible.

Good luck!

Hi, BCG cases are candidate-led, but the interviewer can ask probing questions to both assess the depth of your thinking and to steer you in the right direction (if needed).

Normally, there are 10-15 mins of fit-based questions followed by the case but the format can vary depending on what the interviewers want to test you on.

You can expect market sizing questions as part of the case.

Good luck!

Ask the recruiter - as a rule. Just to avoid any confusion.

For BCG London, the interviews tend to lean more on the candidate led side.

But by now, most interviews fall somewhere on the continuum between candidate led and interviewer led. It's not really black or white.

Re personal fit, they tend to ask questions that are both motivation related and also story-based so it's worth practicing both.

I've built a material for this that you might find relevant:

BCG London first round is candidate-led. You drive the structure, the analysis, and the direction. The interviewer will prompt and probe but they are not guiding you through it.

Market sizing questions can come up either as standalone questions or as part of a broader case. Do not be surprised either way. Practice both formats.

On fit questions, BCG does ask behavioral questions but they are lighter than Bain's PEI. Expect one or two "tell me about a time when" questions per interview. Have two or three strong stories ready around leadership, dealing with ambiguity, and working in teams.

Go in prepared to lead.

hey there :)

first-round BCG in London is usually candidate-led cases, sometimes with a short market sizing embedded, but mostly standard cases. you should definitely expect 1–2 behavioral/PEI questions as well, usually short and focused on leadership, teamwork, or impact
