BCG 1st Round Interview

Hi,

1) There is no fixed interval between the online assessment and the first round invite, and anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks is normal. Invites also tend to go out in waves, so you are still in the process until the stated deadline passes. If two weeks go by with nothing, a short email to the recruiting team is appropriate: thank them, confirm your interest, ask for an expected timeline.

2) The interview will be with a Project Leader or a Principal and will usually run 45 minutes, sometimes 60, with a case of 30 to 35 minutes and the rest on fit questions, plus one or two questions of your own to the interviewer at the end. I recruited extensively in Singapore, in Europe and in the US, and the cases I used were the same in all three, so they are not region specific. What is worth having is awareness of population sizes, market scale and the main local industries.

3) On preparation, start with one session with a coach to diagnose where the real gaps are and build a plan against the time you have left, then work on those specific skills, then build volume. Most candidates need 25 to 30 live cases, with a human partner for at least half of them. The goal is not to memorize more cases but to think better during the case.

4) On scoring, the evaluation is holistic across structuring, quantitative analysis, business judgment, communication and synthesis, and one weak moment does not sink an otherwise strong case. You need to pass each interview individually, so consistency across the round counts for more than one outstanding performance.

In terms of timing, you are generally looking at around 1 to 3 weeks between stages. However, this varies significantly by office and recruiting cycle. Ask recruiting what timeline they expect so that you can plan properly.

For preparation, do not waste time trying to predict the exact case type or industry. You need to be ready for anything across structuring, math, exhibits, business judgment, communication, synthesis, and fit.

I would recommend:

1. Have an initial session with a coach to diagnose your weaknesses and build a preparation plan around the time you actually have.
2. Leverage the free PrepLounge resources and case library.
3. Practice live cases with other PrepLoungers. You need feedback, not just more cases.
4. Prepare your stories for why consulting, why BCG, leadership, conflict, impact, and failure.

Finally, being scared is normal. Worry exists to make us act. Use that concern to identify what you are missing and fix it rather than trying to guess how “forgiving” the interviewers will be.

For the interview, prepare the common core rather than trying to predict a Southeast Asia case type. You need to clarify the objective, build a tailored structure, calculate accurately, explain what the numbers mean, interpret exhibits and finish with a clear recommendation. Prepare flexible stories on leadership, conflict, impact and a setback, plus concise answers for why consulting and why BCG.

Run full mock interviews under time pressure and get feedback against specific skills. Track your two weakest areas and correct them before adding more case volume. Interviewers usually form an overall view across problem solving, judgment and communication, so one imperfect moment is recoverable. What matters is staying structured, responding to guidance and finishing strongly.

It's perfectly normal to be nervous about an interview. 

Typically that comes from the gap between where you think you are skillwise, how difficult you expect the interview to be and lastly, the time you have to prep. 

Re time, you can sometimes ask for the interview to be postponed. This is harder if the interviews are run as part of cohort recruitment, but I would still ask nevertheless. 

Regarding where you are and where you should ideally be, this is where a coach can help. I would suggest you run through a few cases on your own or with peers, and then get a coach to help you understand what is that you do well and where you struggle, so you know what to focus on.

The exact timing varies by SEA office and recruiting cycle, so I wouldn’t assume a fixed number of days after the online assessment. Once invited, the recruiter should give you the timeline.

For R1, expect a mix of fit/experience questions and usually 1 to 2 case interviews. The cases can cover a broad range of business problems, so I wouldn’t try to memorize specific case types. Focus instead on structuring, mental maths, interpreting exhibits, and especially explaining your thinking clearly.

Since you’re still finishing your bachelor’s, I’d also prepare 3 to 4 strong personal stories around leadership, teamwork, impact and handling a difficult situation. For the cases, regular practice with someone who can give you specific feedback is probably the highest value preparation.

You don’t need to be perfect. They’re looking at how you think, communicate and respond when the problem changes.
