Applying For MBB internship after getting rejected for full-time position

Hello,

I applied for a full time associate position at Mckinsey this year, through the online application, without the referral. Took the imbellus test but did not get an invite to the interview.

I'm an advanced degree (PhD) candidate graduating in Spring 2022. Just wanted to know can i apply for an internship position if i have a referral now? Also, can i apply to other non-consulting positions at Mckinsey?

Hi there. Sorry to hear about the previous application. Usually McKinsey has this freezing period for rejected candidates, usually 1-2 years. For all consulting positions, including internship, recruiter will go through your application record when receive your new application and they will notice you're still within the freezing period.

This being said, it's not unheard of that a candidate is exempted from freezing period if he/she can prove that dratisc improvement on credentials or background has been made between last application and new application.

What I suggest you do is to have a chat with the referral you get, be honest about your previous application (I've once referred a candidate who turns out to be recently rejected), and get his/her advice on what's the best way to proceed.

If McKinsey doesn't work out, there is always BCG and Bain :)

All the best!

Hi there,

If you failed a McKinsey application you are usually banned from re-applying for 18 months. There is no difference between an internship or a full-time position.

Also, keep in mind that McKinsey does not recruit for internship positions once you have finished your degree.

All the best,

Florian

Hi there,

1. Can I apply for an internship position if I have a referral now

You should wait the end of the ban period they assigned to you. Usually it ranges between 12 to 24 months (you can verify the one applicable to your case with HR or the person referring you, if you have a good relationship with him/her).

2. Can I apply to other non-consulting positions at McKinsey?

If the position is a non-consulting one you may be able to apply. You may want to double-check that with HR.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

I'm sorry to say but if you failed the test and did not get invited, you are not able to apply within the following 12-24 months.

I highly recommend you reach out to HR and see if you can persuade them (flag that you have a Partner referral and are significantly more prepared). However, I wouldn't hold your breath.
