APAC vs. UAE for MBB full-time

Hi all,

I would appreciate some advice on office preferences for MBB full-time recruiting.

For context, I previously reached the final round for a McKinsey summer internship in an APAC office with a strong semiconductor focus, but did not receive an offer. For 2027 full-time recruiting, I am now deciding whether to rank that APAC office first or prioritize the UAE, where I am currently studying undergrad and have prior work experience.

My longer-term goal is to gain several years of experience before pursuing an MBA in the US and ideally remaining there afterward for a few years. With that objective in mind, which region would provide the stronger platform?

I have heard that Middle East experience can sometimes be viewed less favorably when recruiting for US roles or MBA-related exits. At the same time, I am concerned about the current consulting outlook in APAC, particularly Greater China, and whether that could affect staffing, development opportunities, or future mobility.

Would appreciate any perspectives on:

  • Brand and experience portability to the US
  • Internal transfer opportunities
  • Project quality and industry exposure
  • The current and near-future outlook for consulting in APAC versus the Middle East

Thank you!

Hi there,

On each of your points:

  1. Brand portability: MBB is global and travels regardless of office. What carries to a US MBA and US recruiting is the calibre of your experience and your trajectory, not which region you come from.
  2. Internal transfers: Possible from either region, but you need to be a strong performer and have the backup of a sponsor/practice. Worth confirming current mobility policy with the office directly, as it shifts with the market.
  3. Project quality and industry exposure: Go where you'll be staffed on strong work in an industry you want to build in. That experience is what stays with you and travels, wherever you sit.
  4. APAC vs Middle East outlook: The near-term picture shifts fast, so I wouldn't anchor a multi-year decision on the current cycle.

Overall, both regions are strong MBB platforms into a US MBA. To give you a more detailed reco, I'd need to know a bit more about your profile and target office within each region. Happy to go through it over DM or a quick call, whichever is easier for you.

Best,

Federico
