Alvarez and Marsal Application Process

Hi there,

I hope this note finds you well.

I recently applied for the Data and Modelling Analyst role (Economics Team, Infrastructure Practice) at A&M in London. I bring a year of internship experience with a Development Finance Institute, where I covered infrastructure across Africa—particularly in the energy sector (natural resources, digital infrastructure, and transportation).

Given the role’s emphasis on data analysis, modelling, and sector knowledge, I wanted to ask if you could share guidance on:

  • The skills and tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI/Tableau, programming languages) that would be most valuable to strengthen ahead of the process.
  • Any advice on how candidates can best demonstrate their fit, especially for someone with both infrastructure and finance experience.

I greatly admire the work A&M does in the infrastructure and energy space, and I’d be very grateful for any advice you might be able to share.

Thank you.

Hi there,

For the Data & Modelling Analyst role at A&M, you’ll want to show strength in two areas: technical toolkit and sector fit. On the technical side, Excel is still the foundation – especially comfort with complex formulas, pivot tables, and building clean, logical models. Power BI or Tableau are increasingly used for visualization, so being able to quickly turn outputs into insights is valuable. Some exposure to Python or R for data cleaning/automation can help you stand out, though it’s not always a hard requirement.

On the sector side, emphasize your infrastructure experience – particularly how you’ve translated complex data into actionable insights for decision-makers. A&M values candidates who can not only run the numbers but also tell the “so what” story clearly and concisely. Be ready with examples where you analyzed large data sets, built models, or drew insights in the context of energy or transport projects.

In interviews, they’ll look for a mix of analytical rigour, commercial awareness, and communication skills. Framing your development finance experience as evidence of both technical capability and sector knowledge will be key.

Happy to help you prep – feel free to reach out.

Best,

Evelina

Hi,

Thank you for your response to my question. This is really helpful as I have an interview coming up with A & M for this role. I heard back from the recruiters earlier last week.

The first step I'd take is to have a conversation with the recruiter and understand the recruitment process and the format of the assessment (e.g., technical interview focused on x).

Once that becomes clear, you know where to focus with the 'skills and tools' prep that you were mentioning. Feel free then to also come back to the forum so we can provide more targeted advice.

Re fit, this is more complex. I would be happy to provide you with more tailored suggestions, but it would require that I also understand your background in more detail.

Best,
Cristian

Hey there :)

Focus on Excel modeling, Power BI/Tableau, and basic Python/R for data analysis. Highlight your infrastructure and finance experience by showing concrete examples of insights you generated, models you built, or decisions influenced. Be ready to walk through a small case or analysis, and frame your experience in terms of impact and problem-solving.

best, Alessa :)
