Are referrals actually necessary for finance recruiting?

I was wondering how important referrals and networking really are for finance recruiting right now, especially for investment banking and private equity internships.

In consulting it sometimes feels almost impossible to get interviews without networking heavily first. Is finance similar or can strong applications still get you interviews without referrals?

Also curious what the best way is to approach networking .

IMO - very important. Primarily to help you prepare for interviews, getting the inside scoop at a firm (who is working on what, deal focus, team dynamics, process of interviews, etc.). If you manage to bond with people they are more inclined to pass on your application and advocate on your behalf for an interview invitation or the actual post-interview offer. If you take time to talk to someone, it shows your genuine interest and motivation. Beats every standard, mass communication on LinkedIn.

From my experience as a Financial Advisor, networking definitely helps, but it doesn't replace a strong application. In competitive fields like investment banking and private equity, referrals can help your resume get noticed, but your skills and qualifications still matter most. My advice is to focus on building genuine relationships rather than just asking for referrals- they tend to be more valuable in the long run.
