My friend recommended me senseicopilot.com - he said he used it to land his job at BCG. It's basically an AI interview copilot that provides case guidance in real time. Curious if anyone has heard of it or tried it before.

I highly doubt that it is the sole reason your friend landed the job at BCG, so I wouldn't overestimate its utility. I agree with the reasons other experts have put forward here.

One additional perspective is that if you rely on these tools, you may not develop the confidence as if you didn't rely on them. There is no substitute for experience and practice, and once you've done 100s of cases with quality feedback from your case partner, you will have the confidence to tackle a case without AI.

Another word of caution: I see newbies/juniors using ChatGPT and other AI tools more and more. How we use AI in consulting is a rapidly evolving space and each firm will have their own policies, but juniors need to be cautious about (a) the risks associated with depending on AI for client work and (b) the expectations of newbies/juniors to skill up: it takes expertise to curate and scrutinise AI results - expertise that can only be gained through real experience and practice.

Hi there,

I would be cautious for one reason: AI-based tools do not (yet) do a good job at teaching the dynamic and conversational aspect of a case interview.

This might be the reason why:

- Candidates I meet who practiced with these tools in general have not made great progress using them.

- Real interviews are still being performed in person, at significant costs to the firms.

I would advise using high quality resources (such as Crafting Cases or The 1% method) coupled with good casing partners and personal mentoring.

Hope that helps!

Best,

Gero

Would be curious to hear your feedback on SenseiCopilot.

Google also has its own tool for a while now - before GPTs and LLMs.

That said, I have been testing out interview practice with ChatGPT and so far I have the following observations.

  • LLMs complement structuring drills decently. After creating your own framework - you can feed it to an LLM and ask for more ideas and beefier structure.
  • LLMs are decent at creating a summary/conclusion of the case for the end part - something that is a core strength of LLMs/GPTs
  • LLMs are not good at being critical. No matter how bad a framework you give to ChatGPT, it will always praise you and will not really explain what is bad and why it is bad. It will also not tell you how to cover the journey from bad to good framework
  • LLMs are especially not good at providing personalized advice on how improve your existing interview performance. They can give generic advice.
  • LLMs are very beginner level when suggesting approaches for sizing and estimation. And it will never bash you for taking a wrong approach
  • LLMs are absolutely NOT effective for assessing your interview personality, confidence, body language, and other soft skills. All of those matter a lot more than what candidates focus on. And only a human coach can effectively push you on those matters.

There isn't a breadth of good training material out there. While it may be helpful to practice a bit interactions and challenge yourself a bit, I strongly doubt that it is very useful.

You see, just like any other AI, it is only as good as the training material is gets to learn. Since the material isn't great (and hopefully it was curated / filtered before being fed to the AI), there is a strong limitation to the quality of the tool.

Consider AI tools as complimentary in your interview preparation process.

There are still to generic to be your only source of preparation and it is difficult  (yet!) they simulate the same interview environment as an experience coach can do.

Best,

I've tried a couple of solutions, but I wasn't impressed with any of them yet.

Most of them do a good job of providing generic advice that is at the level that you would also receive from peer feedback - so it's not really going to move the needle.

Still, it's worth using them as a complimentary source. For now, I don't see how they can hurt unless you overly rely on them.

Best,
Cristian
