Jordan Lee, Partner, San Francisco "My perspective on mental health is undoubtedly influenced by my heritage. In the early 1900s, my maternal grandparents fled China’s cultural revolution. My grandfather sold himself to a slave trader to earn safe passage to Malaysia, working many years to re-earn his freedom. Decades later, my parents immigrated to Canada from Singapore and Malaysia. Despite both being well-educated, a doctor and a pharmacist, being the first in their families to leave Asia meant there was no safety net. To illustrate, when I was born, there was no crib so I slept on the dinner table. Safety and security were paramount for them. As the only Asian family in our rural Nova Scotia town, my parents wanted us to assimilate. Their primary fear was that ‘the nail sticking out gets hammered on’, which indelibly shaped how I interacted with the world. It meant that from a young age, I intentionally chose specific social circles to avoid being typecast as Asian. Since then, I’ve finetuned this into an ability to engage with diverse cultural groups which has been invaluable. But this skill, of being a chameleon, has downsides. It’s raised questions about my identity and belonging. It also drove an instinct to become guarded and present varied versions of myself in different contexts. It made being vulnerable difficult and unnatural. But it’s something I’m consciously working on, particularly within the framework of authentic leadership. Drawing on this personal context, I encourage members of the Asian at Bain (AAB) community to acknowledge the cultural biases surrounding discussions on wellbeing. In a predominantly Western business culture individualism prevails, while Eastern culture prioritizes the group’s welfare. This dynamic often leads us to sacrifice personal wellbeing for the collective. However, both can be true. We inherently know this as Bainies, living our “ABNLABF” mentality. Indeed, it is our responsibility to look out not only for each other, but for ourselves. In so doing, we’re able to embrace our unique cultural perspective and navigate wellbeing in a way that's truly authentic." #atBain #AANHPIHM #AANHPI
