The category is profitable, but below the industry average.

Why is the profitability of this category lower than expected and how can the client increase category profitability?

Thank you bery much!

Hi there! I think with a case prompt like this, the best structure is a simple one based on breaking down profitability into its components. We want to know why profitability (likely more specifically “contribution marg ... (read entire answer)

GenCo - BCG Case [from their official website]

BCG BCG Case Interview bcg consulting Case structure and frameworks growth strategy MBB revenues Structure
Most recent answer on Jul 17, 2021

Hello

There is this case on the BCG website called Driving Revenue Growth. the promt says:

our client is GenCo, a large, international, diversified company with a health care division that produces a wide variety of medical instruments and related services. The parent company GenCo produces medical devices and services, but before the acquisition was not involved in health care software. The company it purchased, MedCount, sells only administrative systems software to large hospitals. It is now looking for opportunities to increase revenues.

Under Set up the Framework for the Case they have the following which I tend to believe is generic and a force fitted framework:

First, I'd want to understand the market size and growth rates for MedCount's market and related software markets.

Next, I would like to explore the competition and their market shares.

Third, I would like to examine customer requirements and then, given those external conditions, look at the division's capabilities to understand how well prepared it is to meet the needs of the marketplace.

Note: from the solution, it seems the opportunities for revenue increase are meant for MedCount division not GenCo & MedCount focusing on medical softwares which could be verified via clarifying questions during an actual interview.

Also, the available data and the solution seems to relate to each of the buckets listed in the framework starting with competition and shares, consumer preferences to company's capabilities

What is a better framework for this problem?

Hi there, You are correct - this framework is terribly generic! As a general rule: don't trust the frameworks given in cases. They tend to be oversimplified AND there is rarely one single good framework for a case...s ... (read entire answer)

Growth strategy: PrepLounge Coaches War !

case structure Case structure and frameworks MBB Structure
Most recent answer on Jul 09, 2021

Hello

this post is about the growth strategy framework concept, and like any other framework it shall be customized to fit the given case.

I looked at multiple Q&A (on preplounge and outside preplounge) about structuring growth strategy cases that have increasing revenues as a goal. I saw 2 approaches suggested by coaches listed below.

Some coaches called the first structure "not solid/not exclusive" & suggested the second approach, contrarily, other coaches called the second structure "non-exhaustive" and suggested the first approach.

The first Structure approach: Use a generic framework to allow the candidate ask questions and avoid jumping into the solution structure immediately (which will be the second approach)

Analyze External Factors: the argument for having this bucket is if a company wants to grow revenues by 10% in a market growing at 20% versus growing in a shrinking market

Evolution of the market

competition

consumers tastes and trends

Regulations

     2. Analyze Internal Factor: Use the algebraic form of R = V x P

discuss revenue streams

discuss pricing

      3. Growth Strategy :

Organic

Existing revenue sources

Increase Volume

Increase Price

New revenue sources

Inorganic

Acquisitions

Partnerships

The Second Structure approach: Uses the third bucket of the first structure above as the structure however I do see that some of the buckets above could be inherited in this structure: Revenues = V x P could be discussed when analyzing the organic branch under existing revenue streams however analyzing the market or external factors is important for the argument listed above

Growth Strategy :

Organic

Existing revenue sources

Increase Volume

Increase Price

New revenue sources

Inorganic

Acquisitions

Partnerships

some coaches called the first structure "not solid/not exclusive", contrarily, other coaches called the second structure "non-exhaustive".

So what do you say?

I'm not convinced by either, but would also challenge the premise of the question: Firstly, both structures have their flaws: The first one focuses on process (1. Analyse external factors 2. Analyze internal f ... (read entire answer)

    structuring question

Most recent answer on Jun 27, 2021

Hi everyone,

I came across this question in a case book and was wondering what sort of opening structure would be best here, since the revenue changes by product segment are only presented to the candidate after the initial structure is presented. How would you go beyond revenues = qty x price for this question?

our client is a multinational pharmaceutical and biologics company. The client has a portfolio of drugs for major disease areas, including cancer, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal diseases, to name a few. The client has experienced a decline in revenue over the last 18 months, and is fearful of further declines, especially given that its most commercially successful drug, which treats acid reflux disease, will be going off of patent in May of next year. What are the areas they should look into to change the course of this trend?

Does anyone have experience with this ebook/ resource as a way to simply have an overview of existing frameworks (not to memorize them by heart etc.)

https://www.consulting-case-interviews.com/case-interview-frameworks

I have seen it recommended on 1 thread here on PrepLounge, but when I google it I find surprisingly little information about it. Before I invest, I'd appreciate any feedback/ reviews.

Thank you!

Structure for a framework about corporate strategy

    Case structure and frameworks strategy
Most recent answer on Apr 12, 2021

Hello, I would like to know what could be a good MECE framework to define the strategy of a company. I am looking for a general framework, which can serve as a guide to know what kind of things to analyse.

I can think of:

As-Is: Make a diagnosis of the current situation. But what kind of things?

GAP-Analysis: main problems to solve or things that are far from the best practices of the market.

To-Be: objectives and strategy to achieve them.

But it seems to me a very simple framework. Is there any recommendation of something more complete?

Hey, I think you are pretty much on the mark. Let me improve it a bit. Steps to define a corporate strategy As-Is - Conduct external analysis to identify key trends in the industry and ecosystem. Assess the or ... (read entire answer)

Spending too much time presenting the initial structure at Bain

Actively preparing for interviews with Bain and BCG Anyone who has worked at Bain? Case structure and frameworks Structure
Most recent answer on Mar 19, 2021

Hi PL,

I have an interview with Bain in a fortnight and I wanted to clarify how long I should spend presenting my structure. I understand the rule of thumb for developing the structure is 2 mins or less, but what about presenting it?

Can I spend a longer time presenting my structure if it is deep and insightful? Or should I make it less deep and move to the next steps faster?

My concern is that having a strong structure at the start might score me extra points for this section, but might leave me less time for the other analysis the interviewer will be hoping to go through.

Thanks! :)

Hi there, I would recommend the following as benchmark: 1 min to write down the structure 1.5 min to present They are not strict rules. If you spend 1.5 min to write down the structure or 2 min to present, yo ... (read entire answer)

Building industry knowledge to solve cases

Hi,

I've noticed while practing for cases that my frameworks are stronger and more insightful when dealing with an industry which I am more familiar with, while I struggle and revert to standard, boring frameworks when in less familiar industries.

I was wondering whether there were particulary useful ways of building knowledge of unfamiliar industries so that I can improve my frameworks in these case problems? I'm thinking in terms of revenue and cost structures, margins, risks, competition, etc. I've gone through industry overviews from casebooks which have been useful but I'm looking to expand on that.

Thanks!

    Feeling stuck at Case Practice

case math case math' Case Maths case structure Case structure and frameworks Case Structuring Consutingmath fast math GMAT MathSkills IB Structure
Most recent answer on Oct 26, 2020

Hello everyone! :)

I started my case interview preparation two months ago. First I started reading Case on Point and Victor Cheng book and LOMS. Then I did the free course on craftingcases.com which I find to be the most helpful resource online. Finally, I started practicing cases, I have done around 35+ cases and I identified two biggest weakenesses:

1. Structuring: Develop insightful and MECE frameworks.

2. Problem solving: By this I mean during the math part know how to solve the problem after they give you some data for this.

To tackle each of them I started by structuring, to that I bought Crafting Cases Structuring Drills course, which was very helpful, however I still feel my frameworks are still weak. I still need to focus on the problem solving part.

Today when I did again a live case interview I found myself struggling again, somehow this is quite discouraging specially when you compare with people who have had the same amount of practice as you and solving a case for them seem to be very natural while I find myself struggling.

I would like to know two things:

First: How can I improve my problem solving skills during the math part? Maybe doing some GMAT Problems? Does anyone has any good advice for this?

Second: How can I stop being stuck during my preparation and become more natural?

Thank you very much.

Maybe it helps you to know that mistakes happen a lot. Candidates are nervous, the stakes are high -- interviewers know this. In a way, a mistake is even an opportunity to show the interviewer how you deal with it. Do y ... (read entire answer)

How to Structure and Choose Framework for Profitability Case

Case Interview Case structure and frameworks Framework profitability profitability analysis Profitability Case Cost Structure
Most recent answer on Aug 18, 2020

Hi guys,

I just started to study for the case interview and began with the profitability problems (as many of you suggested), and I do have a couple of questions regarding the framework...

1. I'm studying with the case library and found that the 'structure' given in those cases is pretty different from the ones typicall used - they use terms like prioritization, strategy, and even background, which don't sound like components belong to a framwork...

2. I know that it's basically needed for every profitability case to have cost and revenue analysis, but how about competitors? Some have competitor analysis right after profit analysis as you need to benchmark competitors to see what they are doing right, while some cases, like the 'Chewing Gum' one, don't really have a competition analysis. I'm a bit confused that, since we are structuring framework before we get all the info, we actually don't know where this whole thing will go to - then how to determine which components to include? How to decide whether we will need a competition analysis?

This is like my very first day of case prep so please excuse if you think I'm asking bad questions. Any inputs would be appreciated!

Hi, Given this is your first day, I'm going to take a step back and answer the question you're really asking: How do I use frameworks in a case? If there's anything to remember in this process, is that cases don't e ... (read entire answer)
