Big 4 M&A Strategy Exit Opps

    Big 4 Deloitte M&A
Most recent answer on Aug 02, 2021

Hi all,

I'm curently considering moving from big 4 corporate strategy in a small market (Eastern Europe) to big 4 m&a strategy in the MEA (mostly middle east) region. Cross-border excahnge doesn't exist in my current market, which is the principal reason the moves seems attractive to me. I'd like the oportunity to learn and be challenged by cases in new territories.

What type of work can I expect to do as a big 4 m&a strategy professional in the middle east? Will it primarily be CDD? Can I expect to do end-to-end M&A strategy i.e. advise on strategyic approach to M&A, target hunting, target screening, due diligence, integration, divestitures and separations, joint ventures/alliances, corporate finance, etc? Or will the try strategic part of the work be done by the Bains & McKinseys, leaving only DD to the Big 4? What will the exit opportunities be for big 4 m&a strategy professionals? Will I be restricted to the value creation teams of PEs, or will I still have a shot at becoming CEO of a market leading firm one day? Please advise.

Thank you!!!

Hi there! Perhaps if you can PM some more details or specific firm names - then I can give you a more accurate picture. Thanks, Agrim

I have an interview with a non-MBB consulting firm. The interviewer is the same as the last time. Should I proactively mention during the interview that I applied last year as well or is it better to avoid it unless the interviewer brings it up?

Hey there, There is no benefit in saying it, especially since the person will remember you anyway. Just treat it like a first interview and don't let the past experience influence your performance negatively. Chee ... (read entire answer)

Big 4 boutique firms Career Advise MBB
Most recent answer on Jul 06, 2021

Hi! I am a recent graduate with a Bachelor degree. I have gone through some case interviews lately. Although I worked hard(sometime gave some breaks)& was dedicated, I could not lend an offer from BCG(my dream company). I have questions in my mind about how to move forward and begin to my career. 1)I will have some interviews with a boutique consulting firm and two companies from Big4. On the other hand, I will also have some interviews for positions such as: Project Engineer, Management Trainee in reputable companies, venture capital analyst, investment banking analyst. 2) I may work for 1 year and go to masters next year. 3) McK, Bain and tier-2 recruitment season will start on November here. What do you recommend for me in this position?

Extra question: How do MBB and tier-2 companies see boutique consulting(since their brands are not known as MBB, tier-2,3 companies)?

Some backgroud info about me: Engineering + Business Analytics graduate with high honours from a target school in my country. Had several internships in reputable non-consulting companies.

Thanks for your answers!

Hey, You clearly have a lot going on in terms of options. Well done! But dont fall into the trap of illusion of choices. Not every firm is a great fit for you and neither are you a great fit for every firm. I always a ... (read entire answer)

    Upcoming Big 4 M&A Carve-out/PMI interview

    Big 4 M&A PMI
Most recent answer on Jun 01, 2021

Dear Community,

I would like to ask in question in regard to an upcoming interview I will have at a Big 4 company. I will interview for a position within the PMI/Carve-out team. I know that most of the projects are from a vendors perspective (e.g. vendor due diligence, separation of a business unit, etc.). I am struggling with developing a structure for a possible carve-out scenario on the vendor and buyer side. I also checked previous Q&A's and could extract some valuable information, however these information mostly apply to the buy-side. My question here would be if anyone has an idea or could suggest a possible way to structure a carve out separation case (e.g. Car Company XY is planning to sell their motorcycle division. How should they proceed?).

I would start with asking the following clarifying questions:

Why is the company selling the business unit?

Do they have a financial target in mind (value of business unit)?

What is the internal time frame the business unit should be sold?

As I stated before I am struggling with the development of a structure, however, if I think about the problem, I would like to tackle the following points:

Company analysis How would the company be affected if they sell the business unit? To what extent is the business unit interlinked with the company/group?

Operational Due Diligence Which business units would be affected by the separation?

Separation strategy How feasible? Is it doable?

Risks (Strategic, organizational, financial)

Recommendation

Thinking about a potential integration strategy, I would go as follow:

Company analysis How would the company be affected if they buy the business unit?

Operational Due Diligence Which business units would be affected by the integration?

Integration strategy How feasible? Is it doable? IT, Employees, ...

Risks (Strategic, organizational, financial)

Recommendation

I am very happy for any kind of feedback and help!

Hello! Feel free to PM me! Back in McK I did plenty of DDs, all were M&A, so happy to chat Cheers, Clara

why is strategy& considered "higher tier" than other big 4 strategy firms?

    Big 4 strategy&
Most recent answer on May 06, 2021

Hey there, I am about to apply for a position in strategy consulting in the DACH region. from what i've read, strategy& is considered tier 2 (at same level with OW, RB), whereas EY Parthenon or Deloitte Monitor is considered tier 3?

What exactly is the reason for that? Is it that Booz & Company had higher ranking/status compared before being acquired by PwC compared to OC&C (acquired by EY) and Monitor (acquired by Deloitte)? Or is there any other reason?

Thank you!

Hi there, Good question. I would consider as main reasons the following: Stronger brand of the company acquired (Booz was a pretty respected name, stronger than Parthenon and Monitor) Separation of the brand fro ... (read entire answer)

3 weeks since my final Interview at big 4. Should I even be hopeful at this point?

    Big 4 consulting EY Interview
Most recent answer on Apr 06, 2021

So I had my final round interview at EY 3 weeks ago. I hv followed up every week after the final interview. The latest response from HR is that the team is reviewing all candidates and deciding which ones to proceed with once all of the final interviews have been concluded. Am I screwed?

This is a role I really want, and I am really anxious about what the decision is going to be. The HR also told me to let her know if anything has changed at my end so that she could manage internal expectations.

The wait is really tough :(

Hi there, Unlike MBB, Big 4 take quite some time to provide outcomes (in particular in the Middle East). So you cannot really infer much from the waiting time (although usually the more you wait, the less likely is th ... (read entire answer)

    Strategy& vs. KPMG

Big 4 Deals Strategy Finance first job Job offer M&A Tier 2 Offer tier2
Most recent answer on Mar 31, 2021

Hello together,

I now have my final offer from Strategy& and KPMG in Germany. At the moment, I'm trying to find out a little bit where exactly the differences are (besides the salary, which is not important for the decision).

At KPMG, I would be working in Finance Transformation. Here I understood that I would be doing all projects from controlling to forcecasting to SSC. A lot of work on client site.

At Strategy&, I would be in the Corporate & Business Strategy Team/Deals. Here I would be involved in both buy-side and sell-side projects. The team is still quite new in Germany, but it sounds like there are a lot of M&A and PE activities. Do you know how this differs from working in an M&A boutique? So where is the difference in strategy M&A advisory?

So in summary, I understand if I want to make an exit into a corporate later, KPMG might be more interesting with the finance background, while Strategy& would be super exciting if I want to go into PE or M&A after consulting. Do you agree with me or do you have other input for me?

I would really appreciate your input!

Hi there, I honestly can't offer too much more in terms of specific content regarding these two specifically. That said, I recommend the following: Pick up the phone and try to speak to a few consultants in both o ... (read entire answer)

Most recent answer on Feb 15, 2021

Hello,

I finished all my interviews with one of Big4 companies in the middle east. Initially, HR told me that they would get back to me early February. I followed up another time, and they told me they are still reviewing applications. How long should I give them before they reply? In case this doesn't workout, I am going for a master's degree in analytics, to switch domains. The problem is that I have to decide really soon. Please advise.

    Impression of EY-Parthenon

    Big 4
Most recent answer on Feb 06, 2021

Hi all,

I am currently interviewing for Big 4 consulting and was wondering how the impression of each fairs in the consulting world, specifically EY-Parthenon.

It seems to me that EYP recruit pretty high calibre candidates and I'm confused by my friends' reaction to the firm. Some of them have a really good impression of EYP and tells me it's a good brand name, while others think the Big-4 tag is not so appealing. I'm quite confused as to how it's being viewed by the general consulting world.

Any thoughts? (On other Big-4 helps as well!)

    Response after interviews completion

    Big 4 competitive response
Most recent answer on Jan 23, 2021

Hello,

I finished interviews with EY and PwC 10 days ago; I contacted HR to check about when I would get a feedback, both HR said during the 1st week of february. Does the fact that it is taking that much time a bad sign? I know that people who get an offer are informed within a couple of days; at the same time, some employers are eager to inform candidates who didn t get the job the soonest possible. I am also applying to consulting, but I prefer big 4 mainly because work life balance is relatively better. Your thoughts? Thank you.

    Arthur D Little vs Deloitte

Most recent answer on Dec 22, 2020

Hi All,

I currently work at Deloitte and have been contacted by a recruitment consultant for an opportunity with ADL. The pay is significantly higher at ADL (it would take me another 3-4 years at Deloitte to reach that salary).

How would you draw a comparison between ADL and Deloitte and would you opt for a specific one? The only thing I am aware of is that the work/life balance at MBB firms is worse than Big4, but I'm not sure if that relates to ADL too?

I currently work in a Digital role where I primarily work on IT External Audits, with a scope to work on Advisory engagements. The role at ADL is as a Digital Risk Consultant FYI.

Thanks in advance!
