Hi there,

What exactly is the reapplication ban? Does this apply for different jobs levels and across countries too?

Hi there,

A ban is a freezing period during which you cannot apply (and if you do, you automatically get rejected).

Usually you have:

  • 1-year ban: for internships and/or you had a good performance and were close to a pass
  • 1.5-2 years ban: in other cases

The ban theoretically applies globally, although I know of exceptions via referrals when applying to different continents.

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Thank you explaining this! And is this for those who made it to the Imbellus/interview stage or even just the initial CV screening? I heard of someone reapplying and getting an invitation for Imbellus fairly recently and less than a year. But they also finished their degree from a top school, so maybe that's the case?

Hi there, yes the ban also applies after CV rejection (meaning you cannot immediately apply again). The exact length depends on the office and role, local HR or an internal consultant should be able to advise on that. Hope this helps

Thank you so much! Is it the same for BCG as well? Or are they more flexible about this?

Francesco on Sep 20, 2021

Hi there, yes, BCG also has a ban, most consulting companies do have one. Reason being, they expect you will need some time to improve on the points that led to a rejection

Basically, you are not allowed to re-apply for a period of a year or 18 months. Sending the application will mean a direct rejection.

The ban usually is across offices and for most of the positions.

Thanks. Is this also true for BCG?

Hi there,

It literally means you cannot apply to the company within a certian time period. This applies across offices and roles. Generally the ban is anywhere from 12-24 months.

The ban is a period of 6-24 months (as communicated to you) following your rejection, during which you cannot reapply to McK. Otherwise your application shall be rejected by the system. It is recommended to not try to trick the system by using an alias email ID or any other manner - there is a risk a permanent black listing. This concept is common across most top consulting firms.

Hi there,

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • The reapplication ban is a freezing period during which a potential application from your side would result in an automatic rejection. To be frank, such a ban exists with most companies worldwide yet it is not always explicitely communicated.
  • The reason is pretty simple: When an application was not successful, companies imply that you still need more relevant experience for this position.
  • With most consulting companies, the reapplication ban lasts for 12-24 months and applies globally (in theory, yet there are instances where one might bypass it).
  • In case you want to reapply after being rejected, I would advise you to contact the recruiting department first and speak openly about your will to reapply.

In case you have more questions related to the reapplication ban, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hi there, happy to provide my perspective on that: From the experience of coachees of mine and my personal network, BCG (or most other consulting companies) are an exception from such a reapplication ban. As I pointed out, it is very common with all types of companies yet some might not state it that freely. I hope this helps, Hagen

Hi! This usually differs office to office in my experience and the rules keep on changing. I believe indeed now for most offices it's 1-2 years. A few years ago, however, in Germany, it was for an undetermined period of time. I know somebody who was rejected and they were told explicitly they cannot apply to McKinsey anymore.

In the end, applications are also a bit about luck and not fully about preparation. This might come as no surprise. So generally, the best strategy to have is to have multiple targets and not just one. In the end, the objective should be to become a top management consultant, not specifically a McK or Bain or BCG consultant. If you are in the fortunate situation where you can choose, that's great, but before you get there keep your options open.

Hi!

It's a period where you cannot re-apply. It usually ranges between 12 and 24 months and it applies across jobs and countries too.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Anto

Hello,

The reapplication ban is a certain time period during which you cannot reapply for a position at said company if you have been rejected. The goal is to give candidates who were unsuccessful sufficient time to gain experience and meaningfully improve their candidacy. It is usually around 1 year, though it may vary depending on office or position. Generally it would apply across countries but may or may not apply if you want to reapply for a different job level. It is always worth double-checking the specifics in your situation with HR.
