Hello Mike,

Here there are the main guidelines of the approach that I would suggest:

  • Population of Peru
  • Segmentation of the population by age
  • Estimation of the average media usage per segment
  • Estimation of the % using illegal source per segment

Feel free to contact me if you want to discuss it further.

Hope it helps,
Luca

It´s a classic market stimation where you need to follow a bottom-up approach:

  • Segment total population in age groups of 10 years (0-10, 10-20, etc.)
  • Exclude the extremes
  • Give an educated guess per segment of how much pirated media content each group has. Do it per week, so it´s small figures that you can easiy extrapolate from your daily life.

Furthermore, make sure you clarify the KPI they are looking for, since "Number of media piracy in Peru?" is too vague.

Hope it helps.

Cheers,

Clara

Number of Pirated Content (I assume this is what you want to estimate)

  1. Movies
    • Number of new movies released per year
      1. Local language
      2. Hollywood
      3. Dubbed Content
    • % of hits (Assumption: only hits/successful ones are pirated)
    • (Minus) % of content creators who won’t allow piracy by any means***
  2. Series
    • Number of new series released per year
      1. Local
      2. Hollywood
      3. Dubbed
    • % of hits
    • (Minus) % of content creators who won’t allow piracy by any means***
    • Number of episodes (avg) per series
  3. Others – 20%
  • Movies and series are mainstream preference for pirated content viewers. Hence they constitute 80%
  • Others can be adjusted using the 80-20 principle
  • *** - In Africa, one can find latest box-office hit media content pirated in CDs (compact discs). Whereas, the same doesn’t happen in Europe. So go with what happens in Peru.

Hi,

A good habit is to ask for help (not just in a subject line), and provide at least your ideas, so that we could give feedback

Best!
