Hi, which firms have noticeably strong reputations in particular sectors or practice in the London office? E.g. I've heard OW is strong in FIG, EY-Parthenon in education, Kearney in supply chain optimisation, etc. Are there any other major ones that can be emphasised in a “why this company” question? Thanks!

The specialisation is not just by company - but also by office location. Further, the specialisations keep evolving over time.

Best way to check on this question is by asking current employees on an office-by-office basis.

Hi!

I'm not sure this will be a strong reason why you'd like to join the specific firm.

All top consultancies have a strong presence in the major sectors and practices (with varying degrees of market share of course).

Best,

Anto

Hi there,

The key for you would be to really identify what you are interested in and searching for firms that are “good” in those sectors. Most top consulting firms will have extensive expertise across several sectors anyways. You cannot convince an interviewer that you are interested in a sector you are not to justify the “why company X” - they will catch it.

Wish you the best!

Hi there,

Literally every company will have a particular personal strength in a subset of sectors!

You need to narrow this for us by either a) Listing companies you're interested in or b) Listing the sectors you're interested in

Furthermore, you can do your own reasearch here! Not only does every company have a company website where they explicitly state what they're known for, but during your networking you should be asking these questions!

Hi there,

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • For major consulting companies who span most industries and functions, chances are high that they will cater to similar industries in a country (depending on the dominating local industries). For instance, Germany is known for its strong financial services (banking and insurance), automotive and partially healthcare industries thus all major consulting companies have rather big revenue shares in those practices.
  • Nonetheless, most consulting companies have developed specific “spikes” over time, e.g. Kearney being highly skilled in everything related to Operations or Bain being the by far dominant player in the Private Equity market.
  • Regarding the “Why us?” question, I would advise you to bring up a solid mixture of content and cultural reasons, depending on your current professional situation. I would be more than happy to provide you with a couple of examples from coachees of mine.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best answer the “Why us?” question for each consulting company you want to apply to, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen
