Hi everyone,

I've heard that Mckinsey doesn't have a ban if you don't pass screening. Is that true? What about BCG and Bain ?

I applied to Bain and haven't heard from them for a week. I don't have a clue if I failed a screening and if I did how to improve my CV/approach

Dear Ekaterina,

Thanks a lot for the question.

I confirm that for McKinsey. Generally speaking there is not a ban neither for BCG or Bain

CV screening might take some times. I suggest you to wait for another week and write to HR asking for some updates. In this way you show your interest and determination. I really hope you will receive a positive answer.

In case you will not, I suggest you to ask for some precise feedback from HR if possible. Some answers might be the following:

  • Profile not in line (e.g., university background, grades etc…)
  • Profile in line to be improved (e.g,., review your CV format, add some valuable work experience etc…)

Generally speaking I strongly suggest you to do as much network as possible (e.g., LinkedIn, people you know working in MBB, firm events etc…).

Do not hesitate to reach out me in case of further questions!

Good luck!

Matteo

Hi Ekaterina,

there is no ban if you don't pass CV screening.

If you didn't have heard from Bain I would assume your CV is not standing out. This does not necessarily mean you don't have all the skills and experiences needed, but CV is written in the right way (the key strengths MBB look for are not visible, no stories, etc.).

You can book a session with a coach to evaluate your CV giving you honest feedback and help you to move forward.

Good luck,

Lucie

Hi Ekaterina,

There's no ban but you also can't really apply again until you've changed something substantial. You need to do the following:

1) Get your resume professionally reviewed

2) Get additional experience (i.e. pro bono consulting work, promotions, side projects, etc.)

3) Network extensively

In general there is unlikely to be a ban at the CV screening stage. However if you are not making it past this round there are some serious issues you need to address.

  • What is the format of your CV and is it in line with what is expected?
  • Did you go to a target school?
  • Do you have a high GPA, good extra curriculars and strong work experience?

Applying directly only works well when applying from a target school during recruiting season. Outside of that you really need to apply after networking and getting a referral in order to be considered.

Best,

Udayan

Hello!

There is one when you don´t pass an interview, not for the CV.

However, the logic of it applies to the CV screening too, if you don´t pass: the reason for the ban is that you need to add "relevant" experience to your CV, and you need at least 12-18 months for that.

A referral would for sure help, but after the required months.

Don´t give up!

Cheers,

Clara

There won't be a ban… but you need to improve something in order to get another chance to pass the screening.
