Usually, it's the contacts from your school. In the US there is a central system to make background check inquiries

I wouldn't worry too much. If they need something, they'll reach out! If something is required, it'll likely be an official transcript.

They just check you start and end dates, the school you attended, and degree.
They ask you to fill a form with this information, and that's it. They don't ask for specific evidence, as they can confirm this through their own means.
