**** I am not looking for coaching session --- so please ignore this message if you are looking to sell your services****

I found out today that i made it to the final Mck interview in the Data science track. The feedback was:

1) in the PEI and TEI, i need to better justify my choice of models and sell well my model results

2) work on the case structure and communicate it in a better way.

I have no idea how i made it to the final round but apparently i need to prepare some more.

what is the best way to go about this? How can i build the confidence to face the partners? I am tired and I feel that iam fighting something bigger than me as I have done a lot of work already but the hiring process is still not finished :)

Any advice is more than welcome. Thanks so much

Hi there,

It is difficult to provide specific tips without seeing you in action, but in general:

1. PEI tips

  1. Understand the difference between, leadership, impact and drive areas. You can find their differences here: https://www.preplounge.com/en/consulting-forum/mckinsey-pei-difference-drive-and-personal-impact-918
  2. Identify good stories for each area. Ideally you want to have at least two stories for each dimension.
  3. Use a structure for your story. A possible model is the STARR one (Situation, Task, Action, Rational for Action, Results)
  4. Identify for each story one sentence clarifying what the story is about and start with it. Think of it as the title of an article.
  5. Practice live, collect feedback from people listening to you, reiterate until you get fluent and persuasive

2a. Communication tips

  1. Present the first level, then the second level“So given the goal XXX, I think we could look at 3 main areas: first ABC, second DEF, third GHI. If ok with you I would like to go deeper into each”
  2. Use numbers/clear bullets when presenting levels“In the first area I would like to look at the following: First…, Second..., Finally..."

2b. Case structure improvement

This is a very broad topic and it would be useful if you could detail the feedback you received a bit more to provide an answer.

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Thanks a lot Francesco. Thats exactly what I have done for the first round but with the stress i did not manage to show all those skills. I really feel that the interview process is long and draining. I ll prepare again but this time with the benefit of the feedback and hope for the best.

Hi there,

Well done on getting to the next round and good luck in the second!

To be honest, both of your above improvement areas need live practice. If you're not going the coach route, your best bet is to try and find good partners! They need to be flexible in testing you and be knowlegeable in what good looks like.

Get them to ask you PEI questions they find online. Have them give you data science case prompts for you to structure. Record yourself and evaluate your communication/conciseness.

Good luck!

LOL!! You're asking for free advice annonymously - you could at least give the coaches here an opportunity to pitch their expertise :)

I have no doubt that coaches have the right expertise. It is just that I have been unemployed for 6 months now and I cannot afford extra spending when i have pay school for my kids etc. Sorry if my statement came across as direct
