Hi Everyone,

I hope to get some help and advice here for the MBB London office.

In the last few months, I have been referred to as industry hire for BCG and Mckinsey Digital. Unfortunately, I didn't pass either eventually ( failed at 1st round at BCG but 2nd round at Mckinsey).

Here is my experience so far:

BCG: Three rounds I got were very unstructured on the day, the first interviewer didn't have my CV and started the case with a market sizing problem straight away. The 2nd interviewer was late and I only got 10 min to solve the case which was very rush. In the last case, the interviewer stopped me during my calculation and saying " ok, I see what you are doing but the number doesn't matter". The feedback was that I wasn't driving the case and I was heading in the wrong direction... HR told me that the global policy that you could re-apply in 12months has passed.

Mckinsey: The experience was much better. All rounds are very clear with the whole case upfront with clear objectives and structure. I didn't pass the 2nd round with 2 AP and 1 SP.

The feedback from Mckinsey at the 2nd round was that my PEI was not complicated and challenging enough for them. My structures weren't very in deep-level insights ( but the case were very straight forward profitability) and my conceptual thinking wasn't great. I have been informed that I can try to reapply within 12 months.

Therefore, I am looking for help and advice in terms of:

1. Could I reapply to BCG London in 12 months?

2. What level of deep insights that Mckinsey is looking for given that it was straightforward revenue growth for a fast-food chain? How do I improve my personal experience knowing that situations were challenging to me but not so much to those partners?

Many Thanks

Vicky

Hi,

1. Yes, I guess that's what the HR told you

2. It's really hard to say without you solving the case.

The fit interview requires advanced preparation and I can help you with that if you reach out for a practice session.

Regarding the profitability structure - again, it's hard to say. But here are the most common problems:

  1. Have you clarified the objective clearly? Was it declining profitability, profitability lower than planned or something else? What were the baseline and the target?
  2. Did you take into account different revenue streams that the food chain might have? Product mix?
  3. How did you structure the core revenues? Was it prices and units sold (very common mistake) or the number of customers and the average check?
  4. Did you take into account the number of restaurants? Was it a particular segment performing poorly? (e.g. newly opened restaurants)
  5. Did you take into account all the factors influencing revenues? (Location, work hours, format, assortment / menu, promo pricing, preparation speed, instore experience, cross-selling, loyalty programs, etc.)

Best!
