Hi all,

I am currently applying to Strategy Manager roles in industry (financial services companies mainly, I am exiting consulting post-MBA).

Firstly, I have been told that they also do case interviews - does anyone know how, if at all, these differ in style or difficulty from usual consulting case interviews? And are there any types of cases that tend to be more common in these interviews?

Second, my aim is to hand in my 4-week notice at the beginning of January (it's beginning of September in a few days) - when do you recommend I start sending in applications and tell the headhunters I'm currently in touch with to start pushing me for interviews? So far from talks and feelers I've sent out it looks like it will be easy for me to get the interviews, and it's important for me that I don't leave the firm before January.

Lastly, I am in dire need of reduced stressload and less pressure (and more work-life balance) in my next job - can I trust that this will be the case in a Strat Manager role in industry?

Thank you for your help

Hi,

Based on my experience in the US:

  1. Cases are similar in nature but less demanding in approach and structure
  2. I would start sending the applications 2-3 months before and then negotiate the exact start date. The whole process may take up to 1-2 months, faster if you have an internal referral.
  3. It depends on who is your boss (ex-MBB consultants tend to keep the work-load). Also if the internal strategy is working with the consultants (that happens quite often), your workload will be similar. I recommend talking to the insiders before signing the offer
